SUTHY CLOSE IN ON BEATEN KING’S HEAD A IN POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms have a game in hand and closed to within two points of the King’s Head A after a thrilling sequence of results in week 23 of the Newport & District Pool League.
Tom Fisken’s Sutherland Arms side dropped just one frame on the way to dismissing the fading Shakespeare A at their village fortress, but the league-leading King’s Head A found the going tough at a raucous Railway Tavern against a stubborn LSC at the Tav and succumbed to a thrilling 4-2 defeat.
Greg Heathcote used his get out of jail card on more than one occasion to pip Graham Tigwell and put the home side into the lead but Ben Longstaff squandered his chance to make it 2-0 against Mick Collins. With the match level, Ian Perry managed to complete a useful five-ball clearance in a scrappy frame against Neil Perkins to put the league leaders ahead, but Andy Miles cruised past Irene Whittington to send the match into the deciding doubles matches.
The drama unfolded in the final two racks: Tigwell and Collins were always on top for the away side in frame five, but the former misjudged his pot on the black into the corner and the white careered across the table into the middle pocket and handed LSC a priceless win. Perkins and Heathcote became embroiled in a tense final frame with Perry and Jamie James. Heathcote held his nerve at the second attempt to seal the match after James fouled attempting a very gentle tap on the black.
NRBL were unable to benefit from the King’s Head’s slip up and kissed goodbye to a title challenge after slumping to a 4-2 home defeat to the resurgent Junction A. The defending champions remain nine points behind the King’s Head and Junction A stay in contention for third with a game in hand. “Our season hit a low point tonight,” groaned a despondent NRBL player Antony Heathcote.
Ben Clewes was the only player to lose a match in the Shakespeare C’s 5-1 win over the King’s Head B, which keeps the Upper Bar side in fourth place.
Mike ‘Boing Boing’ Jones’s Wheatsheaf B bagged a useful 4-2 home win over the resistant Royal Navy Club to maintain their challenge for third. Jones overcame Mark Kijuk to put the ‘Sheaf side into the lead, but Dennis Holland embarrassed Luke Jones in rack two to level the score.
Tom Sayce and Jack Jones were firing on all cylinders to make it 3-1 to the home team and Mike Jones and Sayce sealed the match in frame five. Alan Pritchett and Gerry Nunn sealed a second consolation frame for the visitors at the close.
The Railway Tavern maintained a useful run of recent form by beating the Shakespeare B with the loss of two frames. Lauren Heathcote sent Rob Hill packing in frame one, but David Bristow, Greg Quinn and Adam Stone sealed at least a draw for the visitors. The in-form Heathcote and Kim Rigby gave the ladies a chance of an upset in frame five, but Hill and Bristow held their nerve to seal the match in the final frame.
The Plough at Woodseaves pipped Wheatsheaf A by the odd frame across the great divide in Staffordshire and the Navigation managed to beat the Junction B by a similar 4-2 score line at Norbury.
