CUNNING COLLINS WINS CHARITY MATCH AT THE FOX

NEWPORT (SHROPSHIRE): A cold easterly wind and low temperatures kept the fish off the feed in the first King’s Head fishing club’s charity match for the Newport Cottage Care Centre at the Fox Fishery at Pave Lane last Sunday.

King’s Head landlord Mick Collins managed to net a 5lb 4oz tench and a tiny chub to seal victory off peg four. A solitary 4lb 8oz tench was enough for Neil Perkins to take second position off the corner peg five and three small perch were sufficient to net Owen Rigby third place off peg three.

Rob Patterson opted out of the match and used two rods in a bid to catch a bigger fish. He was rewarded with a plump 10lb 7oz mirror carp off peg 11, but was ineligible for the weigh-in.

Newport cricketer Ed Keenan switched to fishing for the day and got himself his customary duck – literally! An errant mallard pulled his unattended pole into the water and across the reservoir and Keenan was forced to strip down to his bare necessities to rescue the pole and the bird from six feet of water. After being well and truly caught out by the incident, the young duck was returned unharmed by the hapless, shivering Keenan.

There were 13 dry nets among the other anglers, with one side of the lake failing to register a single bite in the inclement conditions.

A total of £70 was raised for the Newport Cottage Care Centre.
