KING’S HEAD A GO MARCHING ON IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Mick Collins’s King’s Head A extended their lead to a provisional five points in the Newport & District Pool League on Wednesday night.
With the match between the Sutherland Arms and the Junction A being postponed, the Chetwynd End side failed to drop a frame in a flattering 6-0 win over the Plough at Woodseaves.
The NRBL were unable to benefit from the postponement of the Tibberton match and were held to a shock 3-3 draw by a resurgent Wheatsheaf A. Al Harvey got the better of Colin Farge to put the home side 1-0 up, only for Antony Heathcote to level the scores by beating Nigel Sandbrook.
Ian Trevor stunned a lacklustre Luke Hayward in rack three to give Sarah Smallman-Muruse’s ‘Sheafs’ sight of a famous win, but Mick Beech played a captain’s role well to oust Paul Skitt and keep the tie alive. Honours were shared in the doubles matches; Beech and Heathcote won rack five, but Harvey and Skitt chuckled loudly and silenced the defending champions in the final frame.
The Shakespeare C narrowly claimed the crucial bragging rights over LSC at the Tav after nearly throwing away a 3-1 lead. Gary Bolton and Ben Clewes put the home side into a 2-0 advantage, but a patient Ben Longstaff prevailed against stand-in former league player Phil Jones to pull a frame back for the visitors.
Craig David was on song to win a scrappy fourth frame against Andy Miles to put the home team in sight of the finishing line, only for Longstaff and Greg Heathcote to pull a frame back against Clewes and Jones in rack five.
Bolton and David started brightly in the crucial final frame, but were pegged back well by Neil Perkins and Ian Roberts. Perkins had an opportunity to level the match with a four-ball clearance, but jawed the final straight black in the middle pocket to gift the home side a priceless win and send Clewes into orbit and LSC into a night of despondency.
The Wheatsheaf B climbed to sixth after dropping just one frame to the Navigation in Gnosall. Geoff Arrowsmith put the home side in the driving seat against Liam Matthews, but singles wins for Tom Sayce and Mike and Luke Jones turned the tie in the visitors’ favour. Dave Haynes and Jack Jones sealed the three points for the resurgent Chetwynd Aston side in rack five.
The Railway Tavern left the Shakespeare A shell shocked after a 4-2 victory at Upper Bar. The match was settled in the singles racks with Russ Porter, Adam Stone, Rob Hill and Greg Quinn beating Andy Potter, Ross Richards-Jones, Laura Brennan and Ben Holmes. The visitors won both doubles racks, but the damage had been done.
In the final match of the night, the Royal Navy Club were held to a 3-3 draw by the King’s Head B. The match between the Shakespeare B and the Junction B was postponed.
