KING’S HEAD A WIN CRUCIAL POOL CLASH AGAINST SUTHERLAND

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head A won the battle of the ‘galacticos’ against the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton in the Newport & District Pool League on Wednesday night. The league has now entered the final 10 weeks and the prospect of a thrilling three-way showdown for the coveted title grows ever closer.

Mick Collins’s King’s Head A side entered the week’s fixtures with their lead whittled down from eight to two points by a rampant Sutherland Arms side. But the Chetwynd End outfit held their nerve against the villagers to seal a priceless 5-1 win.

Ian Perry bounced back to form to set the home side on their way against Tom Fisken in a tight opener and Irene Whittington sweated her way to victory over Matt Mansell to make it 2-0.

Graham Tigwell stunned the villagers by beating Jack Hooper to make it 3-0 and the writing was already on the wall when skipper Mick Collins finished well to dispose of Wayne Dodd and seal the points for the league leaders. Honours were shared in the doubles racks, with Colin Smith and Hooper winning frame five and Perry and James wrapping up an unlikely rout in rack six.

Ben Clewes prepared for the big match between Shakespeare C and NRBL by dry-netting at an afternoon fishing session on Newport canal but his luck changed during the pool match. The Shake skipper managed to beat former Newport open champion Antony Heathcote, but drunken and loutish behaviour by the home side marred an otherwise excellent, albeit lucky, 4-2 victory and left a bitter taste in NRBL team players’ mouths.

Steve Whitlock’s weakened Navigation entertained LSC at the Tav in Gnosall but the visitors maintained their run of excellent form with a solid 1-5 victory. Greg Heathcote, Ian Roberts, Ben Longstaff and Neil Perkins wrapped up the match in the singles racks, although Brian Kinnersley and Julie Cheal pulled a frame back for the home side against Heathcote and Andy Miles. Perkins and Roberts prevailed in rack six to push LSC ever closer to the top three.

Shakespeare A knew that they could move up two places to fifth with victory against Wheatsheaf A if results went in their favour elsewhere, but the Upper Bar side were held to a 3-3 draw by Wheatsheaf A at Chetwynd Aston.

Ross Richards-Jones sustained a painful groin-area injury in a first frame defeat against Nigel Sandbrook and that set the tone for Shakespeare fortunes. Dave Marshall managed to put the visitors on the score sheet and Ben Holmes and Andy Potter also contributed to an entertaining clash that ended in stalemate.

The Junction A lost fourth place to Shakespeare C after dropping two points at the Railway Tavern. Sion Richards and Keith Rogers put the Staffordshire side into a 2-0 lead, but Stu Morrey pulled a frame back against Ian Mason, only for Steve Roycroft to put the Junction in sight of a win. The Tavern dug deep and were rewarded with victory in both doubles racks, with Rob Hill, Morrey, Eric Bristow and Greg Quinn doing the damage for the home side.

The ‘all-ladies’ clash between Shakespeare B and King’s Head B ended with the spoils going to the home side at Upper Bar. Rob Patterson got the better of Johnny Marr in frame one for the visitors, but Lauren Heathcote, Sam Stewart-Frost and Kim Rigby redressed the balance and put the Shake on the way to victory. Chris Perry and Patterson gave the visitors hope in frame five, but Rigby and Heathcote sealed the three points for the Shake in the final frame.

The Plough at Woodseaves managed to beat the Royal Navy Club by the odd frame and Mick Ashforth’s Junction B hosted Mike ‘Tin Tin’ Jones’s in-form Wheatsheaf B at Norbury.

Liam Matthews set the visitors on the path to success against the Norbury captain, but R. Morris levelled the scored against Jack Jones. The Junction’s reprieve was short-lived, however, and Tom Sayce and Mike Jones made it 3-1, shortly before Luke Jones and Dave Haynes sealed the match in frame five and Mike Jones and Sayce confirmed the rout in the final rack.
