KING’S HEAD SET FOR SUTHY SHOWDOWN IN NEIL CLARK FINAL
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The league-leading King’s Head A will face the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton in the final of the 2011 Neil Clark Memorial Trophy or Newport & District Pool League Cup on Wednesday, June 1st.
The league’s form sides disposed of the Navigation at Gnosall and the Railway Tavern on Wednesday night to book their places in the June final. The beaten semi-finalists will play a third-place play off on finals’ night at the Royal Navy Club, Bellman’s Yard, Newport.
Both games were settled by a 4-2 margin in the doubles racks but the Railway Tavern so very nearly pulled off an upset against their village rivals. They stormed into a 2-0 lead, courtesy of Russ Porter and Adam Stone, but Jack Hooper and Wayne Dodd levelled the scores in the subsequent two singles racks.
Dodd and Matt Mansell put the away side in sight of the final, but Colin Smith and Hooper became embroiled in a nail-biting final rack against Porter and Greg Quinn. When Smith fouled on his final red, the home side had a superb chance to level the match, but it was not to be and the break broke down. The home side duly handed Hooper a straightforward pot on the black to book the Tibberton side’s place in the final.
They will meet Mick Collins’s league-leading King’s Head side, who also needed the doubles racks to seal their place in a second final in three years. Beaten two years ago by Shakespeare A, Collins’s gladiators prevailed against Steve Whitlock’s plucky Staffordshire outfit with the outspoken and under pressure Jamie James excelling for the visitors.
