SHAKE A STUN KING’S HEAD A TO
THROW POOL SERIES WIDE OPEN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Shakespeare A stunned league-leading King’s Head A to throw the race for the Newport & District Pool League title wide open on a night of drama.
Andy Potter beat Phil Emery to give the home side the lead and Laura Brennan stunned Graham Tigwell in rack two. Ross Richards-Jones silenced Jamie James to earn at least a draw for the home side, but Irene Whittington managed to squeeze a vital frame win out of Ben Holmes to give the King’s Head hope of salvaging a draw for the previously unbeaten side playing in the absence of inspirational skipper Mick Collins.
It wasn’t to be: Holmes and Richards Jones got the better of a returning Ian Perry and Tigwell in frame five and the Shakespeare sealed a memorable win when Potter and Brennan beat Emery and Whittington. “This team is well beatable,” quipped a delighted Potter after the match.
The Sutherland Arms at Tibberton have a game in hand over the King’s Head A and reduced the leaders’ lead to just five points after securing a 5-1 win over a fading Shakespeare C side. Tom Fisken set the villagers on their way and Matt Mansell made it 2-0 by silencing Ben Clewes.
Gary Bolton cleared well to pull a frame back for the visitors, only for Wayne Dodd to secure the fourth frame for the ‘Suthy’. Dodd and Mansell sealed the win in frame five and Fisken and Colin Smith added spice to the score in rack six.
NRBL maintained their slim chance of retaining the league title with a cagey 4-2 win over the Royal Navy Club. Mick Beech got the home side off to a winning start and a returning Antony Heathcote beat Mark Kijuk to make it 2-0. Gerry Nunn accidentally rolled the black in prematurely against Colin Pink to seal the visitors’ fate, but Alan Pritchett pulled the fourth frame back for the away team.
Heathcote and Beech sealed the win with a useful clearance by Beech, but an inspired Pritchett and Nunn beat Pink and Charlie Hayward to earn the visitors a deserved second frame.
LSC at the Tav continued their unbeaten run by beating Shakespeare B, 6-0. Ian Roberts averted disaster to squeeze through against Hannah Evans, Greg Heathcote was never in danger against Sam Stewart-Frost and Andy Miles managed to save his blushes with a lucky win over Lauren Heathcote to make it 3-0 to the home side. Will Dorsett was able to fend off opponent Kim Rigby and verbal abuse from a spectating Kim Wan Loi to seal the three points for LSC. Dorsett and Heathcote won rack five and Miles and a Wembley-bound Roberts bonded to seal the rout in rack six.
The King’s Head B have been playing some excellent pool in recent weeks and were rewarded with a fine 4-2 home win over Junction B at Chetwynd End. It was the ladies’ first win of the season.
Mike ‘Tin Tin’ Jones’s Wheatsheaf B continued their run of superb form by demolishing the Railway Tavern at Chetwynd Aston. Honours were shared in the clash between the Plough at Woodseaves and the Navigation and in the match between the Junction A and a resurgent Wheatsheaf A.
