KING’S HEAD A SURVIVE POTENTIAL JUNCTION BANANA SKIN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head A overcame a potential banana skin clash against the Junction A to maintain an eight-point lead in the Newport & District Pool League after 18 matches.

Graham Tigwell set the league leaders on their way by beating Sion Richards and skipper Mick Collins edged his frame against Keith Rogers to make it 2-0. Irene Whittington beat Steve Roycroft to seal at least a draw for the home side and Jamie James bounced back to form with the performance of the night to seal the three points for the Chetwynd End side against Ian Mason. Hyla Marklew’s Junction side restored their pride by winning both doubles racks.

Both the Sutherland Arms and the NRBL kept up the pressure with useful wins in their matches against the Royal Navy Club and the Navigation at Gnosall. Tom Fisken’s Tibberton side dropped just one frame against the Navy Club, who had beaten the Shakespeare A, 5-1, in a rearranged fixture on Tuesday night.

Fisken, Matt Mansell, Jack Hooper and Wayne Dodd sealed the three points for the visitors in the singles matches, but Alan Pritchett and Jez Price managed to win the final frame against Fisken and Hooper to put the Bellman’s Yard side on the score sheet.

The NRBL dropped two frames against Steve Whitlock’s Gnosall side and maintained third place in the league. Luke Hayward and Colin Pink made it 2-0 to the defending champions, but Steve Smith grabbed a frame back for the home team. Mick Beech sealed the third frame and Pink and Charlie Hayward sealed the three points in rack five. The win was marred by a spat between NRBL skipper Beech and team regular Antony Heathcote.

The Shakespeare A bounced back from a stunning defeat in the rearranged game against the Royal Navy Club to beat Ben Clewes’s fifth-placed Shakespeare C, 4-2.

LSC at the Tav secured a useful 1-5 victory at the Junction B under the temporary captaincy of Greg Heathcote. Norbury’s Mick Ashforth edged a tight frame against Ian Roberts to put the home side 1-0 up, but Greg Heathcote snatched rack two from Stewart Till to level the scores.

Neil Perkins won a scrappy third frame against Ryan Morris to put the visitors into the lead and Andy Miles benefited from a John Owen foul to seal frame four. Heathcote and Miles wrapped up the three points in a tight fifth frame encounter against Till and Morris and Perkins and returning former skipper Dave Price clinched the final frame for the visitors.

Both Wheatsheaf sides earned useful 5-1 wins. Only Luke Jones was on the receiving end in the B team’s win over the King’s Head B. Louise Anyon had put the visitors into a shock lead, but Jack Jones, Tom Sayce and Mike Jones redressed the balance in the subsequent three singles frames and Liam Matthews and Dave Haynes joined the rout in the doubles.

The Wheatsheaf A again did the Chetwynd Aston watering hole proud by beating a lacklustre Railway Tavern, 1-5. Nigel Sandbrook, Al Harvey, Ian Trevor and Paul Skitt all saw the light with wins over Greg Quinn, Rob Hill, Stu Morrey and Adam Stone and the ‘Sheaf A sealed a second successive good result, despite Oddy Hodskinson and Trevor losing frame five on the night to Quinn and Roger Porter.

The Plough at Woodseaves crushed the Shakespeare B, 5-1, in the final match of the night. Vicki Winter, Kirk Robinson and Tony Morris put the Plough into a useful 0-3 lead, but Kim Rigby beat James Morris to give the Upper Bar team hope. Winter, Vicky Hopkins, Rich Bayliss and Robinson sealed the rout in the doubles racks.
