NRBL AND JUNCTION A CLOSE IN ON POOL LEAGUE LEADERS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) were the main beneficiaries in the week 17 round of matches in the Newport & District Pool League, on a night where the league-leading King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw by a plucky Wheatsheaf A and the Shakespeare C suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Junction A.

Mick Beech’s under-achieving NRBL team brushed the Shakespeare B aside without dropping a frame and closed the gap on the leaders to 10 points.

Luke Hayward set the defending champions on their way with a win over Sam Frost and Antony Heathcote saved the family blushes by beating sister Lauren in rack two. Charlie Hayward made it 3-0 by ousting Hannah Evans in frame three and Mick Beech sealed the points against Kim Rigby before the home sealed confirmed the whitewash in the two doubles racks.

The league-leading King’s Head A ‘suffered’ their second draw of the season against a resurgent Wheatsheaf A. Irene Whittington, Graham Tigwell and Phil Emery put the champions-elect into the lead, but Jamie Jones succumbed in frame four and the Chetwynd Aston side prevailed in both doubles racks to seal a superb draw. “We made Sarah and Tosh proud tonight,” quipped Paul Skitt.

The Junction A triumphed in the best result of the night against Shakespeare C. Sion Richards disposed of Gary Bolton to put the Norbury side 1-0 up and Keith Rogers made it 2-0. Ben Clewes clawed a frame back against Ian Mason, but that was as good as it got for the visitors – Steve Roycroft won rack four and the Staffordshire side cruised through both doubles racks to seal a massive win and move above their opponents in the league table.

The Wheatsheaf B very nearly exacted revenge on LSC at the Tav for their cup defeat, but honours were shared in a tight encounter at Upper Bar. Greg Heathcote squeezed through against Luke Jones to put the home side 1-0 up, but Neil Perkins lost a tense black ball decider to Jack Jones in a frame where both players benefited from a fluke.

Ben Longstaff somehow turned his match around against Tom Sayce to make it to 2-1 to the home side, but Mike Jones hit form at the right time to beat Andy Miles and level the scores.

An inspired double and a pressure black by Mike Jones gave Sayce, Jones and the away team the advantage in rack five, but Perkins held his nerve to pot his remaining two balls in the final frame against Luke Jones and David ‘Danny’ Haynes to seal the draw for partner Ian Roberts and the LSC side.

The King’s Head B won one frame in a 1-5 home defeat to the Railway Tavern. The in-form Lyn Day sent Stu Morrey packing in frame one, but Greg Quinn, Rob Hill and Adam Stone made it 1-3 to the away side and the Railway Tavern side secured both doubles racks to confirm a comfortable win.

In the final match of the night, Mick Ashforth’s Junction B secured an excellent 2-4 away win at the Plough at Woodseaves. The match between the Shakespeare A and the Royal Navy Club was postponed until next Tuesday and squad unavailability forced the Navigation to postpone their match against the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton.
