KING’S HEAD A MAINTAIN POOL LEAGUE PACE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head A maintained a seven-point lead in the Newport & District Pool League after demolishing the Railway Tavern 6-0 at Upper Bar.

Skipper Mick Collins kept up his 100% record with a win over Diddy Dodd and Graham Tigwell made it 2-0. Irene Whittington beat Greg Quinn to earn at least a draw for the league leaders and Phil Emery sealed the win with a hard-earned frame win over Adam Stone.

The visitors completed the whitewash in the two doubles racks. “I don’t think we will lose a match this season now,” boasted Collins, the reigning Carling Newport Open Champion.

Predictably, the Sutherland Arms and the Shakespeare C kept up the pressure with wins in their matches. The Tibberton side were rather fortunate to come away with a 4-2 victory from the Shakespeare B and Ben Clewes’s side earned a similar score at the Wheatsheaf A.

The performance of the night came from King’s Head B, who very nearly pulled off the shock of the season against LSC at the Tav. An inspired Rob Patterson crushed a hazy Greg Heathcote in rack one to put the home side 1-0 up and Neil Perkins breathed a sigh of relief in frame two when Maggie O’Brien accidentally potted the black to level the scores.

Lucy Hennessey took Andy ‘Dead End’ Miles to the black, as the away side edged into the lead, but Lyn Day disposed of Ian Roberts to level the scores. Patterson popped up to put the bottom side into a 3-2 lead in rack five and it took a piece of Miles ‘double wizardry’ to save Ben Longstaff’s lacklustre side from a crushing defeat.

Defending champions NRBL were held to a shock 3-3 draw by the improving Junction B. Mick Ashforth stunned mighty Mick Beech in rack one, but Antony Heathcote restored his captain’s faith by winning frame two.

Colin Farge beat John Owen to make it 2-1 to the Newport side and Colin Pink earned at least a draw for the NRBL. But Beech’s barmy army took their foot off the gas in both doubles racks and the Norbury side earned a famous draw. “Wim Legion ay we,” quipped a disgruntled Beech.

The Junction A closed the gap on the NRBL for fourth place to two points after a 4-2 away victory at the Navy Club. Sion Richards, Ian Mason, Steve Roycroft and Keith Rogers did the damage in the four singles matches, but Denis Holland, Gerry Nunn, Alan Pritchett and Mark Kijuk made amends in the doubles to restore some pride for the Newport side.

In the remaining two matches of the night, Mike Jones’s Wheatsheaf B continued their improvement with a 4-2 victory over the Plough at Woodseaves and the Shakespeare A got revenge for last week’s 4-2 home defeat by the Navigation by beating the Gnosall side by a similar score line this week.

Results should be sent as soon as possible after matches on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153.
