KING’S HEAD A KEEP UP THE MOMENTUM IN POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head A maintained a seven-point lead with a hard-earned 4-2 victory over the Railway Tavern, as the Newport & District Pool League reached its season mid-point on Wednesday night.
Stu Morrey put the away side into a shock 0-1 lead by beating Graham Tigwell, but Mick Collins and Irene Whittington redressed the balance by beating Greg Quinn and Adam Stone to place the home team in the driving seat. Phil Emery beat Rob Hill to continue the top team’s unbeaten record and Whittington and Emery sealed the victory in the first of the doubles racks.
Mick Collins was forced to give the struggling Ian Perry a run out in the doubles and he and Jamie James did little to please the King’s Head’s skipper – the Railway Tavern duly snatched the final frame, courtesy of Stone and Morrey.
Tom Fisken’s Sutherland Arms at Tibberton kept up the pressure on the league leaders with a 6-0 victory over the Shakespeare B, but Shakespeare C lost ground on the leaders after being held to a 3-3 draw at Chetwynd Aston by Wheatsheaf A. “It was a bad day at the office,” moaned Shakespeare C team captain Ben Clewes.
The dropped points by Shakespeare C enabled NRBL to snatch third position. Mick Beech got the defending champions off to the perfect start and Luke Hayward made it 2-0. Antony Heathcote continues with his poor run of form and succumbed to some useful play by S. Till, as the Junction B hit back to make the score 2-1. Beech and Charlie Hayward lost a roller-coaster doubles rack, but Colin Pink secured the three points for the Legion in the final frame.
The Junction A maintained fifth with a 4-2 victory over the Royal Navy Club, while a useful 2-4 away win for the Navigation at Gnosall against Shakespeare A cost the Newport side their sixth place in the league.
LSC at the Tav misfired their way through a poor match against the King’s Head B at Upper Bar. Ian Roberts somehow managed to put the home team into the lead, but Lyn Day pushed Greg Heathcote all the way and Andy Miles was off form and nearly succumbed to Maggie O’Brien’s challenge.
Lucy Hennessey took Ben Longstaff to the final black in a thrilling encounter, but the home side sealed the three points in the first of the doubles racks. Sloppy play by Roberts and Heathcote threw frame six wide open and up stepped Chris Perry to make a superb clearance and hand the bottom side the frame that they deserved.
The Plough at Woodseaves held the Wheatsheaf B to a 3-3 draw in the final match of the night.
