HEATHCOTE HANDS BEECH THE PERFECT BIRTHDAY PRESENT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC’s Greg Heathcote handed NRBL captain Mick Beech a perfect birthday ‘in-off’ as the Legion side maintained their impressive run of form to dismiss LSC at the Tav and keep the pressure on the King’s Head A, Sutherland Arms and the Shakespeare C at the top of the Newport & District Pool League.

The defending champions made a dream start when Ian Roberts snookered himself on a colour and Colin Pink used the two shot penalty to maximum advantage to clear the table and put NRBL 1-0 up at the Tavern.

A misjudged snooker by Neil Perkins handed frame two on a plate to Antony Heathcote and the visitors sailed into a 0-3 lead when Mick Beech capitalised on sloppy Greg Heathcote play to win the rack on the black. “I’m too old for cake and candles, but I’ll take birthday presents like that every day of the week,” quipped Beech.

Ben Longstaff got the better of Luke Hayward in frame four to give the home side a lifeline, but in-offs prevailed in frame five and Pink and Charlie Hayward had started the victory march before Will Dorsett and Roberts reached the table for the home side in rack six.

NRBL were unable to make in-roads into the top three, despite their resounding win. Mick Collins’s league-leading King’s Head A saw off Gnosall’s Navigation, 2-4, to maintain a five-point lead and the Sutherland Arms racked up a 5-1 win over King’s Head B at Chetwynd End, despite Maggie O’Brien firing the hosts into a shock 1-0 lead.

Shakespeare C continued their unbeaten run in third place with a 2-4 win at the Navy Club. Jez Price humiliated Ade Darrell to put the home team into a 1-0 lead, but the visitors hit back with a pair of quick-fire frames with Gary Bolton leading the charge. Alan Pritchett levelled the scores for the home side by silencing Ben Clewes, but the away side prevailed in both doubles racks to maintain third in the league.

Honours were shared in the clash between Wheatsheaf B and Shakespeare A at Chetwynd Aston. Ross-Richards Jones put the visitors in the driving seat, but Luke Jones and Tom Sayce were firing on all cylinders to swing the tie in the home side’s favour. Andy Potter squared the match in rack four and the points were shared after the two doubles racks.

Wheatsheaf A kick-started their woeful season with a 1-5 win against Shakespeare B at Upper Bar. Sarah Smallman-Muruse’s ‘wind-up merchants’ won the first three frames, courtesy of Nigel Sandbrook, Al Harvey and Ian Trevor, and overcame Paul Skitt’s humiliation by Kim Rigby in frame four to seal both doubles frames.

The Plough at Woodseaves enjoyed an unlikely win over the inconsistent Railway Tavern. Vicki Winter prepared for her showdown with Dave ‘Bezza’ Price next week by trouncing Adam Stone. Sam Higgins and Greg Quinn redressed the balance for the away side, but Tony Morris squared the match for the village outfit against Rob Hill.

Vicky Hipkins and Rich Bayliss joined Winter and Morris in the doubles to seal all three points for the Plough, much to the bewilderment of Tavern skipper Stu Morrey.

In the final match of the night, Hyla Marklew’s Junction A climbed above LSC at the Tav and into fifth position with a tense 4-2 win over pub rivals Junction B at Norbury.

Results should be sent as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153.
