NRBL CONFIRM SHALLOW WIN AGAINST WHEATSHEAF A

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL emphasised their reputation as the most unpopular team in the Newport & District Pool League with a 6-0 demolition of the Wheatsheaf A in farcical circumstances at the Newport Legion. The win-at-all-costs team upset the visitors from the outset with their unsporting attitude and continue to win few friends for their match night conduct.

The Sutherland Arms beat the in-form Junction A, 4-2, at Tibberton but the result of the match between the table-topping King’s Head A and the Plough at Woodseaves was not available as we closed for press.

The Shakespeare C very nearly lost their unbeaten record against LSC at the Tavern. Ian Roberts won a comedy of errors first frame against Ade Darrell to put the home side 1-0 up, but Ben Clewes and Gary Bolton swung the tie in the visitors’ favour with two useful frame wins. Ben Longstaff held his nerve to level the score at 2-2 and he teamed up well with Roberts to put the home side in sight of victory.

Bolton started well in the crucial final rack for the visitors, but the home side were handed two shots for a violation and Greg Heathcote looked set to win the match for LSC until he jawed his final ball in the middle pocket and handed Bolton a lifeline pot on the black.

The Wheatsheaf B were held to a 3-3 draw by the Navigation at Chetwynd Aston. Mike Jones set the home side on their way, only for Scott Podmore, Steve Whitlock and Geoff Arrowsmith to put the visitors into a commanding 1-3 lead. But the ‘Sheaf B fought back well and Tom Sayce, Mike and Luke Jones and Danny Haynes bonded to win both singles racks and force an unlikely draw.

The Shakespeare A won the local derby clash against the Railway Tavern at Upper Bar. Greg Quinn put the visitors into the lead but Ross Richards-Jones and Ben Holmes swung the tie in the home team’s favour. Sam Higgins levelled the scores and then the home side were triumphant in both doubles’ racks to secure the three points.

The Navy Club won the bottom-of-the-table clash against the King’s Head B. Maggie O’Brien was on heat in her singles match to fire the home team into the lead, but Dennis Holland and Gerry Nunn redressed the balance and Allen Pritchett sealed at least a draw for the away team.

Lucy Hennessey and Tash Pugh ensured that the Bellman’s Yard team were forced to work for all three points and Mark Kijuk and Pritchett clinched the vital frame for the away side.

Match results should be sent as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153.

Please note that all league fees (£30 per team) must be paid by Monday, February 21st or points scored by teams will not count after this date. This is the final warning and there will be no exceptions. Clearly marked envelopes can be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern.
