NAVIGATION SET UP SEMI-FINAL SHOWDOWN WITH KING’S HEAD A
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Gnosall’s Navigation will meet King’s Head A and the Railway Tavern are set to face the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton in the semi-finals of the 2011 Neil Clark Memorial Trophy or Newport & District Pool League Cup. All four sides managed to squeeze through their quarterfinal matches on Wednesday night.
Irene Whittington, Graham Tigwell and Ian Perry put the King’s Head in a commanding 3-0 position against the NRBL with Colin Farge, Antony Heathcote and Mick Beech on the wrong end of the spanking. But the clash of the Newport Open champions ended in a win for Colin Pink over Mick Collins to give the away side a lifeline. However, Perry and Tigwell sealed the match for the home side against Pink and Farge to set up the last four visit to Gnosall in April.
The Junction A at Norbury have been the Sutherland Arms’s bogey side for several years, but Tom Fisken’s village enterprise managed to overcome their hoodoo in straight frames to book a place in the last four.
The Railway Tavern showed no mercy to the Navy Club at Bellman’s Yard. Greg Quinn, Rob Hill, Adam Stone and Stu Morrey did the damage in the singles racks and the Upper Bar side unnecessarily inflicted further pain on their wounded rivals by playing the two doubles racks to a winning conclusion.
The Navigation humiliated a full-strength LSC at the Tavern side at Gnosall with S. Smith, Geoff Arrowsmith, Scott Podmore and T. Waldron sealing the Staffordshire side’s place in the semi-finals for the second successive year.
The two teams opted to play a re-arranged December match as well on the night and the Newport team exacted revenge, with Greg Heathcote, Ben Longstaff and Neil Perkins winning their singles racks and Heathcote sealing the three league points in rack five to hand LSC a 4-2 win and move then up to fifth in the league.
Semi-final ties in the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy will be played on Wednesday, April 20th, 2011. League fixtures resumes as per the usual schedule next Wednesday.
