LEADING NEWPORT POOL TRIO WIN CONFORTABLY

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head A, Sutherland Arms and the Shakespeare C comfortably won their week nine round of matches in the 2010-2011 Newport & District Pool League.

The league-leading King’s Head A whitewashed Junction B, with Graham Tigwell, Mick Collins, Irene Whittington and Phil Emery sealing the match in the singles, as absentee Ian Perry celebrated a once-in-a-lifetime result at St. Andrews.

Tom Fisken’s Sutherland Arms whitewashed the Plough at Woodseaves and Shakespeare C kept up the pressure with a 1-5 victory at the pub’s C team. Hazel Ford-Lewis showed her ignorance of the offside trap to lose to sweetheart Ade Darrell in frame one and Hannah Evans and Lauren Heathcote also fell foul of the linesman’s flag. Kim Rigby restored the home side’s faith in rack four, but Darrell clinched the match for the high-flying Upper Bar C team in rack five.

LSC at the Tav dropped their first frames at the Railway Tavern in four home matches. Andy Potter outgunned Ian Roberts to set the away side on their way, but Greg Heathcote, Neil Perkins and Will Dorsett struck gold for the home team and Heathcote clinched the match at a raucous Railway in frame five.

Andy ‘Dead Rubber’ Miles and new signing Matt Tonks played the final rack for LSC, but Potter restored some pride for the neighbouring side to make the final score 4-2.

NRBL drew with the Railway Tavern. Antony Heathcote put the home side in front only for the away side to level the score. Veteran Sean Finney returned from the baize wilderness to embarrass Charley Hayward and put the visitors 1-2 in front, only for Colin Pink to level the match.

Pink and Luke Hayward put the home side in sight of victory, but Beech and Heathcote were forced to eat some humble pie in rack six when the unfancied Tavern side snatched a draw.

Wheatsheaf B won the clash of the Chetwynd Aston sides. Nigel Sandbrook put the ‘visitors’ 0-1 up only for Liam Matthews to level the score. Jack Jones was in sensational form to make it 2-1 and Luke Jones fluked the black to guarantee the B team at least a draw.

Landlady Sarah Smallman Muruse’s loyalties were firmly divided when Mike Jones and Tom Sayce failed to clinch the match for the B team in rack five. But Luke Jones and Dave Haynes hit form at the right time in frame six to secure a valuable three points for the B team.

Shakespeare B claimed their second win of the season with a 4-2 success over the Navy Club in a rearranged game. Sam Frost put the visitors 0-1 up against Dennis Holland, but Mark Kijuk levelled the score with a win over Kim Rigby. Gerry Nunn edged the home side into a 2-1 lead, but Lauren Heathcote stunned Alan Pritchett to level the match heading into the doubles.

Rigby and Frost prevailed in frame five and the girls sealed an excellent win thanks to some useful play by Hannah Evans and Heathcote in the sixth rack.

Results should be sent as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153. Three outstanding week four matches must be rearranged in the next seven days.

Please note that all league fees (£30 per team) must be paid by February 17th or points scored by teams will not count after this date. Clearly marked envelopes can be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern.
