KINGS BEAT THE QUEENS AND GO MARCHING

ON IN NEWPORT & DISTRICT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Mick Collins’s rampant King’s Head A side continued to pull away from the chasing pack after the seventh week of matches in the Newport & District Pool League.

The Chetwynd End side hosted their ladies B team in a one-sided clash and, predictably, claimed all three points to take their season’s tally to 19 from a possible 21.

“The kings beat the queens,” quipped Collins. “It was actually closer than the score suggests. Louise Anyon nearly beat Graham Tigwell and Lucy Hennessey nearly pipped me. It could have been embarrassing.”

NRBL needed to put a couple of poor performances in recent weeks behind them in a match against Shakespeare A and they only dropped one frame on their way to a 5-1 victory to keep the pressure on King’s Head A near the top of the table.

The Plough entertained the patchy Junction A at Woodseaves, but had no answer to Hyla Marklew defending Neil Clark Memorial Trophy winners. It was a much-needed 0-6 victory for the Norbury side and lifted them to 11th.

LSC at the Tav hosted lowly Wheatsheaf A at the Railway Tavern and were keen to put last week’s thrashing by King’s Head A firmly behind them. Inspired by a superb performance by Ipswich Town on the pub’s television screens, Dave Price’s mid-table outfit crushed the ‘Sheaf without losing a frame.

“After the post-Christmas hangover it was important that we bounced back,” said Price. “The lads did me proud tonight. Tamas Priskin was inspired.”

Ian Roberts also edged Nigel Sandbrook for the home side, Greg Heathcote won his match against Paul Skitt and Ben Longstaff and Will Dorsett also got on the score sheet for the home side. Andy Miles joined the rout in the doubles.

Hazel Ford-Lewis’s Shakespeare B side played Steve Whitlock’s Navigation at Upper Bar and fought hard to earn a 3-3 draw. The Railway Tavern continued their run of good form with a 5-1 victory over Shakespeare B in a late result from last week.
