BEECH ON THE BRINK AS KING’S HEAD CRUSH NRBL

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Mick Beech was holding on to his captaincy of the NRBL by a thread after the defending Newport & District Pool League champions crashed to a crushing 5-1 defeat at the hands of King’s Head A, the new league leaders.

Graham Tigwell humiliated Colin Pink with a stunning seven-ball clearance in rack one and the NRBL capitulated. Ian Perry and Mick Collins managed to edge two frames against Antony Heathcote and Luke Hayward to earn the home side at least a draw, but Beech, to his credit, pulled a frame back for the champions against Irene Whittington.

But Collins, the defending Newport Open Champion, sealed the points for the Chetwynd End side with a doubles win alongside Perry over Heathcote and Pink. Tigwell and Jamie James rubbed salt into the NRBL’s open wounds against Beech and Charlie Hayward to make it 5-1.

The Sutherland Arms at Tibberton maintained second position with a hard-fought 4-2 win over bottom side Wheatsheaf A and the Shakespeare C moved to within a point of third place by beating the Plough at Woodseaves, 4-2. The home side went 0-2 down before rallying to level the scores and seal the match in the doubles.

LSC at the Tavern are the form side. Skipper Dave Price refused to ‘tinker’ with a winning squad and his decision was a wise one. Ian Roberts and Greg Heathcote rode their luck to beat Jez Price and Dennis Holland before Ben Longstaff seven-balled the unfortunate Gerry Nunn.

Allen Pritchett pulled a frame back for the home side in rack four against Will Dorsett, but Neil Perkins held his nerve to seal the three points for the away side in rack five. A delighted Price handed a debut showing to Preston rookie Anthony ‘Tiny’ Miles in frame six and the youngster bonded well with Roberts to seal the final frame and move LSC into fifth with a game in hand.

The Railway Tavern are tied on points with LSC after a 3-3 draw against the Junction B. Mick Ashforth put the visitors 0-1 to the good only for Adam Stone to level the scores at Upper Bar. Steve Till edged the Norbury side in front, but Dan Upton redressed the balance and honours were shared in the doubles racks.

The Wheatsheaf B earned their first win of the season against the Shakespeare B. Paul West put the home side into an early lead, but Liam Matthews, Mike Jones and Tom Sayce made up for Jack Jones’s faux pas in frame one and the visitors also sealed the doubles racks to confirm a convincing 1-5 win.

The Shakespeare A stunned the Junction A at Norbury to claim a 2-4 away win and move up to seventh in the league. Sion Richards put the home side 1-0 up, but Andy Potter levelled the scores against Steve Roycroft. Keith Rogers put the Staffordshire outfit within sight of a point, although Ben Holmes was on good form to dismiss Hyla Marklew and the away side claimed both doubles racks, with young Ross Richards-Jones joining in the rout in rack five.

In the final match of the night, Gnosall’s Navigation managed to earn a 5-1 home win against the King’s Head B.
