NRBL AND KING’S HEAD A MAINTAIN WINNING

START TO NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE SEASON

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL and the King’s Head A maintained their 100% winning start to the 2010/2011 Newport & District Pool League season, although NRBL’s crushing 6-0 victory at the Royal Navy Club gives them the top spot on frame difference after three matches.

Colin Farge, Antony Heathcote, Mick Beech and Charlie Hayward sealed the points in the singles frames with wins over Mark Kijuk, Jez Price, Gerry Nunn and Alan Pritchett and there was to be no consolation frame for the Navy Club in the doubles racks.

Mick Collins and Irene Whittington, the newly crowned Newport Open champions, continued their unbeaten start to the new league season and Ian Perry also managed to put a rare win next to his name in the 4-2 win over the previously unbeaten Shakespeare A team.

Lilleshall Sports Centre visited Hazel Ford-Lewis’s ‘Theatre of Dreams’ for a clash against Shakespeare B that Dave Price’s underachievers had lost last season. But unbeaten LSC appear to have turned the corner and Price, Ian Roberts, William ‘Sydney’ Dorsett, Ben Longstaff and Greg Heathcote all managed to seal a win in a 5-1 victory, which lifts them to sixth in the table.

Tom Fisken’s Sutherland Arms team were held to a 3-3 draw by Ade Darrell’s new Shakespeare C side at Upper Bar and the two points dropped means that the Tibberton side slip to third in the league.

The Railway Tavern maintained their good start to the season with a 4-2 win over Wheatsheaf B. A mistake by Jack Jones handed frame one to the home side and good play by Stu Morrey in frame three sealed at least a draw for the home team after Luke Jones was beaten in rack two.

Tom Sayce pulled a frame back for the visitors, but the Railway sealed the match in frame five and a useful Mike Jones clearance in the sixth rack was too late to spare the Wheatsheaf B their first defeat of the season.

Steve Whitlock’s Navigation squeezed through against the Plough at Woodseaves by a 4-2 margin to seal their first points of the season at the expense of the Plough’s unbeaten start in the previous two matches.

The Junction B showed no mercy to the King’s Head B team and won the match 6-0, while the Wheatsheaf A were humiliated on their home table by a rampant Junction A side. “We were a joke tonight,” admitted Wheatsheaf player Ian Trevor. “We let landlord Tosh, Sarah and ourselves down.”

It was a much-needed win for Hyla Marklew’s Staffordshire side, which had lost the previous two matches.
