SUMNER PILES ON OPEN POOL AGONY FOR BEECH

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Cyril Evans and Brian Sumner capped a miserable 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open campaign for Mick Beech.

The Whitchurch duo dropped only one frame out of the four they needed to despatch Beech and Colin Farge from the quarterfinals of the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open and book their place in the semi-final. Sumner had already knocked Beech out of the singles’ competition at the third round stage.

Awaiting them in the last four of the doubles are the Telford father and son duo of Luke and Charlie Hayward, Hinstock’s Colin Pink and Market Drayton partner Mick Manning and the winner of the remaining quarter-final clash between Newport’s Ben Longstaff and Neil Perkins and Stafford’s Brendan Ruttledge and Will Edge.

Irene Whittington managed to beat Kim Rigby and complete the semi-final line-up for the Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport Women’s Open. All three frames were mightily close, but the King’s Head league player managed to snatch all three from her Shakespeare opponent.

Hazel Ford-Lewis, Hannah Evans and Lyn Day (Woodhouse) had already reached the semi-finals.

The three remaining third round fixtures in the Carling Newport Pool Open featuring Russ Woodhouse/Brendan Ruttledge, Ian Roberts/Ben Longstaff and Chris Broomhall/Ed Keenan must be played by Wednesday, September 15th.
