COLLINS EXACTS HIS NEWPORT POOL REVENGE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport’s Mick Collins exacted revenge for last year’s first round defeat by Neil Perkins in clinical style in round three of the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open.
Despite potting the black from the break in frame one, Collins was quickly into his stride and clinched the opening rack with some solid positional play. Perkins was never at the races in frame two and a six-ball clearance by Collins left the tournament organiser reeling. There was no respite in frame three either and, when Perkins fouled trying to leave Collins in a black ball snooker, the King’s Head star was safely through to the last eight.
Collins was joined in the quarterfinals by Newport’s John Williams. The snooker supreme was taken all the way to the fifth frame by Stafford’s Will Edge. Both players took time to get into their stride and Edge snatched the first and third frames to push himself towards the last eight.
But Williams always looked likely to redress the balance and a useful clearance in rack four set up the tiebreak frame showdown. Both players had their chances to win the frame in a potting-dominated match, but it was Williams who eventually prevailed.
LSC league player Ben Longstaff dropped just one frame in his second round match against Luke Jones at the Shakespeare and will now face Ian Roberts in his third round tie. Jones was up against it from the start, although he had chances to seal the fourth frame and force the match into a tiebreak.
Lyn Woodhouse sealed her place in the semi-finals of the Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport Women’s Open with a 3-0 win over Sam Stewart-Frost. All three games went down to the wire, but the King’s Head league player did enough to clinch her place in the last four alongside Hazel Ford-Lewis and Hannah Evans. Kim Rigby and Irene Whittington will decide the last semi-final place in the ladies’ competition.
All third round fixtures must be played by Wednesday, September 15th.
