DAVE VILLWOCK PIPPED TO ALBERT LEE CUP VICTORY IN SEATTLE
· Steve David seals Albert Lee Cup in Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison
· Villwock and U-96 Spirit of Qatar win heats 1B and 3B
SEATTLE (USA): Dave Villwock and U-96 Spirit of Qatar were pipped to victory in the Albert Lee Cup, round four of the 2010 H1 Unlimited Championship, by Steve David in U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison on Seattle’s Lake Washington on Sunday afternoon.
David took the lead at the first turn of the winner-takes-all race held in rough water conditions, but Villwock was right on his tail. At the end of lap one, David held a slim lead and the pair continued their duel through lap two. Villwock was on the limit through the third tour, but was unable to pass the U-1 driver and David held the U-96 Spirit of Qatar charge off through the subsequent two laps to seal the win.
“Villwock’s a fantastic champion and we are going to Doha in Qatar (the last race of the season) and will do our best to bring home our third consecutive national championship,” said David.
The win increased David’s lead in the National High Points championship to 506 points heading into November’s Oryx Cup in Qatar.
In the day’s preliminary heat 2A, it was again a battle of the top two drivers in the National High Points race. Villwock and the U-96 Spirit of Qatar tried to catch David and the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto, as the two best unlimited drivers raced from the outside lanes. David held off Villwock to finish third in the heat, while the U-21 Miss Albert Lee Appliance and Brian Perkins finished on top.
U-96 Spirit of Qatar is a sponsorship programme instigated by His Excellency Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani, President of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF), which will host the final round of the H1 Unlimited Championship in November.
Villwock had put U-96 Spirit of Qatar at the top of the Friday qualifying ladder with a morning lap of 155.888, shortly before Greg Hopp out-qualified Steve David in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto 148.701 to 148.484 to grab second spot.
Steve David and Villwock won Saturday’s preliminaries, with the U-96 Spirit of Qatar driver comfortably winning heat 1B to remain 350 points behind David in the National High Points race.
But the eventual fourth place in heat 2A, a win in heat 3B and the loss in the final mean that Villwock and the U-96 Spirit of Qatar team have it all to do in Qatar in November.
