FORMER NEWPORT OPEN CHAMPIONS SET FOR POOL SHOWDOWN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The third round draw for the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open has pitted 2007 champion Colin Pink against 2008 title winner Antony Heathcote in a potentially-explosive clash at Newport Legion.

Defending champion, Brendan Ruttledge from Stafford, will face Russ Woodhouse in Newport, while the pick of the Worthington’s Newport doubles quarter-final matches is the tie between Ruttledge and Will Edge and Newport’s Ben Longstaff and Neil Perkins.

Hazel Ford-Lewis and Hannah Evans have byes into the semi-finals of the Fusion Hair and Beauty Women’s Open, but Irene Whittington and Lyn Woodhouse will have to overcome Kim Rigby and Sam Stewart-Frost to join them.

The tie of the first round of the Carling Newport Pool Open was the marathon 70-minute contest between Longstaff and Keith Rogers at Norbury. Longstaff edged in front on two occasions, only to be pegged back by the Junction league player from Gnosall. But Roberts missed an opportunity to clinch the match in rack five and Longstaff held his nerve to seal his final four balls once Rogers had fouled in a tricky snooker.

Ade Darrell and James Grice came back from 0-2 down against Cyril Evans and Brian Sumner, but the Whitchurch duo regrouped in rack five to seal their quarterfinal place in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open with Sumner leading the way with some solid play. They will play Mick Beech and Colin Farge in the quarterfinals.

Sumner also prevailed in straight frames against Andy Potter at the Legion in his singles match, while Luke Jones upset Ian Lewis’s title aspirations by a similar score line and now faces Longstaff in the second round.

Neil ‘Hurricane’ Haseley was firing on all cylinders to gun down Jamie James in a late first round match at the King’s Head. He now faces Stafford’s Will Edge in the second round, with the winner set to face snooker stalwart John Williams in round three.

Mick Beech and Colin Farge silenced the fancied Anthony Heathcote and Andy Lycett in a first round doubles match. Banter had been flying for several weeks that the match could have been the tie of the round, but Farge proved he was a class act with some useful play to humiliate Lycett, the former Legion league captain, and the former Newport Open champion, Heathcote, in straight frames. “I think the 3-0 score line can do the talking,” crowed Beech.

All second and third round fixtures must be played by Wednesday, September 15th.
