TAVERN’S IAN ROBERTS HITS CRUISE
CONTROL IN CARLING NEWPORT POOL OPEN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Railway Tavern’s Ian Roberts maintained a 100% winning start to his challenge for honours in the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open and the Worthington’s Newport Pool Doubles Open.
The LSC league player disposed of the New Inn’s Richard Talbot within 25 minutes to sail through to the last 18 of the singles’ competition, but he and Steve Morrey dropped the first frame in a 3-1 victory over Neil Haseley and Dave Price in the doubles.
Price was the first player to lose his first round singles match as well. LSC’s league captain blithered his way through three hazy frames against former champion, Antony Heathcote, but he never looked likely to upset last year’s beaten finalist.
Stafford’s Brendan Ruttledge and Will Edge began their challenge for doubles honours with a 3-1 win over Mike and Luke Jones in the preliminary round, but the shock of the early matches was an excellent 3-2 victory for Telford’s Luke and Charlie Hayward against the hotly-tipped King’s Head duo, Mick Collins and Ed Keenan.
Luke Hayward also strolled through to the second round of the singles competition with a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Shakespeare’s Richard Young.
Snooker stalwart John Williams surged into a 2-0 lead over young Ross Richards-Jones, only for the plucky youngster to level the match on his tournament debut. A fluked black eventually put Williams into the second round draw in a nervy fifth frame.
Mick Collins defeated Telford’s Chris Nolan, 3-1, and Hannah Evans became the first female player into the second round draw in the Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport Women’s Open. Evans beat Tasha Pugh 3-1 to move into the business end of the inaugural ladies’ competition.
Players are requested to leave all unpaid tournament entry fees in a clearly marked envelope at the Railway Tavern as soon as possible.
