SUTHERLAND ARMS PIP SHAKESPEARE
TO SECOND PLACE ON FRAME DIFFERENCE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Sutherland Arms confirmed the runner-up spot behind the NRBL on the final night of the 2009/2010 Newport and District Pool League.
The Tibberton side were held to a 3-3 draw by a stubborn Junction B, but the point was enough to pip the Shakespeare A for the runner-up spot on frame difference.
The Upper Bar side disposed of their B team counterparts in a jovial 5-1 encounter at the Shake. Dan Brennan, Paul Burton and ‘double’ supremo Laura Brennan did the damage in the singles racks, although Kim Rigby beat Ben Holmes to give the B team the chance of a draw. The expectant Brennan duo put the match beyond doubt in frame five and an Ade Darrell error in the sixth frame confirmed a comfortable win for the venue’s premier side.
The Wheatsheaf leapfrogged Lilleshall Sports Centre with a useful 4-2 away victory in a rearranged match against the Audco at the Shake, but the Chetwynd Aston side went down 5-1 in their final league match of the season at the King’s Head A.
Irene Roberts, Ian Perry, Frank Skinner and Mick Collins sealed the three points in the singles racks, although Oddy Hodgkinson and Ian Trevor restored some normality for the Wheatsheaf in the first of the doubles frames.
Lileshall Sports Centre and the NRBL were granted 4-2 walkover wins against the Railway Tavern and the Swan at Newport and honours were shared in the final match of the season between the Navigation at Gnosall and the Navy Club, veteran Dennis Holland rueing a missed opportunity to seal the match for the Newport side on the black.
The New Inn confirmed seventh position with a 4-2 victory over the King’s Head B, but the shock of the evening was a 4-2 victory for the ‘Audco at the Shake’ against the high-flying Junction A. The result meant that the King’s Head A pipped the Norbury side to fourth position.
An inspired Ross Richards-Jones put the home side 1-0 up and Matt Tonks edged Ian Mason to make it 2-0, only to see Max Jones annihilated in rack three. Lyndon Hobbs beat Gordon Sidebottom to give the Audco a 3-1 lead. He and Jones prevailed against Mason and Keith Rogers in frame five to seal the three points for the youthful side and Tonks and Jones brought the curtain down on the season with victory in rack six to complete an unlikely rout.
In addition to the Carling Newport Pool Open and Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open – which got underway this week – the King’s Head will host a knockout competition every Wednesday during the close season. Entry will be £2 and the winner and runner-up will take the cash. Action starts at 19.30hrs each Wednesday from next week at the King’s Head.
The 2010/2011 Newport & District Pool league season will start on Wednesday, November 10th. Existing teams and new venues should contact Neil Perkins on 07831 123153 as soon as possible to reserve their place in the league.
