TREVOR HUMBLED AS SUTHERLAND CLOSE IN ON SECOND PLACE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Sutherland Arms at Tibberton moved to within one point of sealing second position in the Newport & District Pool League on a night when the King’s Head’s Lyn Woodhouse humiliated Paul Trevor, the former Newport Open Champion, and the Shakespeare A benefited from some excellent Laura Brennan play to beat Junction B by the odd frame.

NRBL continued their march towards a record-breaking points’ tally, despite Trevor’s blushes and Chris Perry potting the white after she had potted the black.

The Shakespeare A are relying on the Sutherland Arms slipping up in their final game against the Junction B if they are to take second position, but Andy Potter, Dan Brennan and Laura Brennan were the form players for the Upper Bar side in a fine win at Norbury.

Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft and Keith Rogers made sure of all three points for the Junction A against the Shakespeare B, but Ade Darrell and James Grice restored some pride for the Newport side.

The Audco at the Shake’s Ross Richards-Jones and Matt Tonks cancelled out wins for the Navigation’s Alan Smart and Steve Whitlock in a fiery encounter in Newport and the youngsters prevailed in both doubles racks to take a useful three points for a 4-2 win.

Lilleshall Sports Centre finished their topsy-turvy season on a high with a 4-2 win over the New Inn. Even with ‘three’ shots and a sleeping referee, Dave Price couldn’t beat Luke Jones, but Neil Perkins and Ben Longstaff put the home side in the driving seat. Mick Andrews redressed the balance in frame four, but Marc Simpson, Perkins, Longstaff and an in-form Marcus Thomas sealed the points for the home side.

Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft and Keith Rogers pushed Junction A into a 3-0 lead against Norbury rivals Junction B in a rearranged game. Mick Ashforth got the better of Ian Mason to make it 3-1, but Hyla Markew, Richards, Rogers and Mason prevailed in the doubles to continue their late push for fourth place.

The Navigation were held to a 3-3 draw by the ever-improving Shakespeare B side and now look unlikely to be able to catch the Junction A and King’s Head A in the battle for fourth position. Grice and Darrell put the visitors 2-0 up, only for Stuart Smith to pull a frame back for the home side.

Kim Rigby stunned Geoff Arrowsmith to give the visitors at least a draw, but Steve Whitlock, Smith, Alan Smart and Scott Podmore sealed both doubles frames to earn a point for the Gnosall side.

The league draws to a close next Wednesday evening. Winners’ awards will be handed out at the finals’ night for the Carling Newport Pool Open competition to be held at the Navy Club, provisionally on Wednesday, October 20th. The new league season will start on Wednesday, November 10th.
