WHEATSHEAF CLIMB A PLACE WITH NAVY CLUB POOL ROUT
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston crushed the Navy Club without dropping a frame and duly moved above Lilleshall Sports Centre into ninth position in the Newport & District Pool League. “Even I won my game,” gloated team PR spokesman Chris Cooper.
The King’s Head A dropped just one frame to the ‘Audco at the Shake’. According to in-form skipper Mick Collins, Ross Goodchild was in stunning form and carried Ian Perry in one of the doubles racks, with youngster Richard Anthony the only Audco player to trouble the scorers at Chetwynd End.
The Sutherland Arms maintained their hold on second position with a 4-2 victory over bottom side King’s Head B. The girls’ team played well to earn two frames, but a seven-ball clearance by Matt Mansell was the highlight of the contest at Tibberton. The match between the Shakespeare A and the Swan was postponed and the Sutherland Arms now have a five-point grasp on second place, despite playing an extra game.
Lilleshall Sports Centre were regrettably forced to cancel their match at the NRBL due to the loss of three players through work commitments. Because of the game’s close proximity to the end of the season, league winners NRBL have duly claimed the match, 4-2.
The Navigation dropped just one frame in seeing off the Swan in a rearranged match and the Shakespeare A completed a whitewash against the King’s Head B in another rearranged match. NRBL beat the New Inn, 4-2, in a late result from last week, despite a heated exchange between two NRBL players.
Please also note that entries for the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open and the Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport Women’s Open close on Sunday morning. Players are advised to fill in the forms at their local venues as soon as possible to enable landlords to return entries in good time for the first round draw on Monday evening.
