NRBL PULL CLEAR IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) maintained their surge towards a second Newport & District Pool League title by beating the Navigation 5-1 at Gnosall.
The league leaders were without the injured Anthony Heathcote, but managed to brush past the home side, with Paul Trevor and Colin Pink leading the march in the singles.
NRBL’s cause was boosted with the news that the pursuing Sutherland Arms at Tibberton had crashed to a 4-2 defeat to Hyla Marklew’s in-form Junction A side in Norbury. Sion Richards set the home side on their way with a win over Jenni Dandy, only for Gary Bolton to level the scores.
Ian Mason and Keith Rogers guaranteed the draw in the next two singles racks and duly clinched the match with a doubles’ win over Jon Hooper and Colin Smith. The Tibberton side gained a consolation final frame win courtesy of Bolton and Wayne Dodd.
Lilleshall Sports Centre squeezed past the Wheatsheaf in a high-spirited contest at Chetwynd Aston. Nigel Sandbrook overcame Dave Price in frame one to put the home side ahead, but Chris Cooper squandered a possible seven-ball rout of Neil Perkins in frame two and the scores were levelled. Ben Longstaff was in fine potting form in frame three for the visitors and Marc Simpson guaranteed at least the draw for the visitors in the final singles rack.
A sensational fluke by Sandbrook on the black clinched frame five, but Perkins held his nerve in rack six to seal the three points on a night where ‘Eric’ reared his unpredictable head for the first time.
The Navy Club managed to squeeze past the King’s Head B by the odd frame and the ‘Audco at the Shake’ beat the Swan by a similar score in less than an hour to maintain their recent run of good form.
Mick Collins’s King’s Head A side managed to brush the New Inn aside by the odd frame and Richard Young’s flying Shakespeare A side left Ben Clewes’s Railway Tavern team stunned on the receiving end of a clinical 4-2 defeat at a packed Upper Bar venue.
The Junction B beat the Shakespeare B, 4-2, in the final match of the night. The contest finished shortly before midnight with the girls’ team again frustrated by an inability to produce a killer instinct to finish off crucial frames.
Match results should be sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Outstanding annual pool fees of £30 must be paid by Saturday evening at the latest and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern.
