NRBL AND SUTHERLAND ARMS STAY AHEAD IN NEWPORT POOL

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Both the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton and the Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) secured straightforward victories in week 21 of the Newport & District Pool League to ensure that the NRBL retained a five-point lead at the head of the league tables with nine matches remaining.

The Tibberton side beat the Navigation at Gnosall with the loss of just one frame to maintain the pressure on the defending champions. Jenni Dandy, Tom Fisken and Jon Hooper pushed the home side into to a 3-0 lead, but Stuart Smith pulled a frame back for the Gnosall side and it needed a win for Fisken and Hooper in frame six to secure the three points for the village side.

NRBL beat the King’s Head, 4-2, at the Legion, despite Mick Beech excelling by potting the black on his first visit to the table! Jamie James and Mick Collins triumphed for the away side in the singles racks in a close encounter.

A rampant Shakespeare A side crushed the Junction A at Upper Bar. Dan and Laura Brennan set the home side off to a perfect start against Sion Richards and Steve Roycroft, but Keith Rogers pulled a frame back for the away team. A useful frame win for Paul Burton swung the tie in the home side’s favour and Dave Marshall and Carl Fletcher secured the win in frame five. Andy Potter and Dan Brennan rubbed salt into the Junction’s wounds in the final frame.

Lilleshall Sports Centre switched their home match against the Navy Club to a raucous Railway Tavern and played without skipper Dave Price, Ben Longstaff and the courting Greg Heathcote. Ian Roberts, Marc Simpson and Neil Haseley pushed the ‘home’ side into a 3-0 lead, but Alan Pritchett ensured the tie stayed in the balance with a fine win for the away side in frame four.

Gerry Nunn and Dennis Holland emerged triumphant from a marathon fifth rack to leave the tie on a knife edge, but an unsavoury incident with a drunken Harper Adams’ student – which left Neil Perkins with a broken team cue – failed to prevent the home side taking all three points in a dramatic final frame.

The Railway Tavern crushed the Junction at Norbury. Anthony Winfield, Ben Clewes, Ray Talbot and Louis Fudge ran riot in the singles to secure the win and the quartet prevailed in the doubles to seal a stunning victory against Mick Ashforth’s stunned Staffordshire side.

The Swan edged a 4-2 win over the Shakespeare B. Stu Morrey, Mark Bradley and Dan O’Connor pushed the home side into to a 3-0 advantage, but Kim Rigby unsettled the Lower Bar outfit with a win over John Marston. Morrey and O’Connor clinched the decisive fifth frame to hand the three points to the Swan.

The Wheatsheaf shocked the New Inn with a 4-2 victory at Stafford Street. Nigel Sandbrook silenced Mick Andrews in frame one, but Mike Matthews and Rich Talbot made it 2-1 to the home side. Paul Skitt lived up to his ‘safe and secure’ reputation to level the scores in frame four and Al Harvey, Sandbrook, Skitt and Ian Trevor prevailed in the doubles to secure an excellent win for the Chetwynd Aston side.

The score for the match against the King’s Head B and the ‘Audco at the Shake’ was unavailable as we closed for press.

Match results should be sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 must be paid by Saturday evening at the latest and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern.
