RAILWAY TAVERN TO MEET JUNCTION A

IN NEIL CLARK MEMORIAL TROPHY FINAL

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Junction A will meet the Railway Tavern in the final of the 2010 Neil Clark Memorial Trophy at the Royal Navy Club on Wednesday, June 2nd.

The Norbury side showed no mercy against a plucky Audco team at Bellman’s Yard. Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft, Ian Mason and Keith Rogers did the damage in the singles racks and there was no way back for the Newport youngsters from then on.

The Railway Tavern were forced to work much harder for their place in the coveted final. Ray Talbot – a former classmate of the late Neil Clark – set the home side on their way with a win over Steve Smith, but Scott Podmore got the better of Louis Fudge to level the scores. Geoff Arrowsmith put the away team within sight of the final in rack three, but Ben Clewes managed to overcome Navigation landlord Steve Whitlock to level the scores at 2-2.

Tension was paramount in the doubles frames. Clewes and Fudge dug deep to force a frame win over Podmore and Alan Smart and Talbot and Anthony Winfield began the celebrations for the home side with a stunning victory over Smith and Whitlock. The Navigation will now meet the Audco in the third-place play-off on finals’ night.

Meanwhile, there were two rearranged matches in the Newport & District Pool League on Wednesday night. The New Inn hosted the Swan and Lilleshall Sports Centre switched their delayed home tie against the Shakespeare B to the Upper Bar venue.

The New inn managed to squeeze past the Swan by the odd frame in Stafford Street, but LSC’s 5-1 victory against the Shakespeare B flattered to deceive. Former league winner, Steven James Davies, made his debut for the Shakespeare in the absence of the AWOL Hannah Evans and very nearly got the better of LSC skipper Dave Price in a marathon opening encounter.

Sam Frost pushed Neil Perkins all the way in frame two, but Kim Rigby failed to prevent Ben Longstaff from putting the away side 0-3 in front. Netball sensation and Shakespeare landlady Hazel Ford-Lewis rescued the tie with victory on the black against Ian Roberts in the ‘clash of the publicans’ but Perkins, Roberts, Price and Longstaff weathered the doubles’ storm to claim a somewhat flattering 5-1 win. Team rookie Marc Simpson was rested to aid the recovery from his groin injury.

Match results should be sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 must be by the end of April at the latest and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern.
