NEWPORT LEGION STAY OUT IN FRONT IN POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion maintained their lead in the Newport & District Pool League with a 5-1 victory over Junction B, but the Sutherland Arms kept up the pressure with a hard-earned 4-2 victory over the Shakespeare B in Tibberton.
The Audco A suffered a disappointing 5-1 reverse at the Shakespeare A. Richard Anthony and Matthew Tonks prevented the embarrassing whitewash, but it was a useful home victory for the ever-improving Andy Potter, Richard Young, Laura and Dan Brennan and Sarah Pocock.
The Railway Tavern managed to eke out a useful 3-3 draw at the King’s Head A, but games involving the Junction A, Navy Club, Wheatsheaf, Navigation, New Inn and Swan were postponed until the teams meet again in league turn-around double-headers on Wednesday.
Honours were shared in an entertaining clash between the New Inn and Lilleshall Sports Centre at Stafford Street. Graham Parkinson put the home side 1-0 up, but newcomer Mark Simpson stunned Mick Andrews to level the scores. An outrageous fluke on the black by Neil Haseley gave LSC a 2-1 lead and Neil Perkins confirmed at least a draw for the away side in rack four.
But two tight doubles matches both went in favour of the home side, with Mike ‘Sinatra’ Mathews and James Neville triumphing in the final frame. Waitress service was also provided by Emily Marshall.
It was a useful week for LSC. They also managed to beat King’s Head B, 5-1, with Greg Heathcote, Simpson and Perkins doing the damage against the King’s Head B, although Chris Perry did benefit from a black in-off to give the away side one singles’ frame.
Match results should be sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 must be paid now and should be left with results sheets in a clearly marked envelope with bar staff at the Railway Tavern.
