NRBL CRUSH SORROW WHEATSHEAF IN POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) have only dropped one frame in their opening four matches in the 2009/2010 Newport & District Pool League campaign.
The Wheatsheaf were on the end of the 6-0 drubbing on Wednesday night, with Colin Farge, Jon Mason, Mighty Beech and Andy Lycett getting the better of Nigel Sandbrook, Ian Trevor, Paul Skitt and Chris Cooper in the singles matches.
There seems to be a curse on any challengers to the Legion’s crown this season. The New Inn crashed to a 5-1 home defeat to the lowly Navy Club and the Shakespeare A lost a heated exchange to the Navigation at Upper Bar.
Peter Dickinson and Alex Smart put the visitors into a 2-0 lead and Geoff Arrowsmith made it 3-0. Andy Potter got the better of Steve Whitlock to give the home side a chance and Richard Young teamed up with Dan Brennan to make it 2-3. But Dickinson and Smart secured all three points with a doubles rack win over Potter and Laura Brennan, as the Gnosall side continue their impressive start to the season.
Under the captaincy of Jenny Dandy, the Sutherland Arms continued a terrific start to the season with a shock 5-1 win over the hotly-tipped King’s Head A. The result moves the Tibberton team into second position in the league.
The young Audco SC recorded their first win of the season against a pitiful Lilleshall Sports Centre side. A woeful potting surface did neither team any favours, but Dave Price, Greg Heathcote and Ben Longstaff capitulated against Ross Richards-Jones, Mike Lowe and Richard Anthony.
Neil Perkins somehow managed to overcome Matt Tonks to give the home side some hope, but a woeful clearance botch by Perkins handed the three points to the Audco in frame five, by which time new signing Marcus Thomas was left to play a dead rubber and seal a consolation second frame for the home team, who now lie pointless and bottom for the league for the first time in history. Even team groupie Stuart Weeden has deserted the sinking Lilleshall ship.
The all-ladies clash between King’s Head B and Shakespeare B turned into a 5-1 rout for the away side at Chetwynd End. Kim Rigby and Sam Frost got the visitors off to a flying start against Chris Perry and Lyn Woodhouse and the contest was settled before the doubles matches when Hannah Evans beat Lucy Hennessey and Hazel Ford-Lewis whipped Maggie O’Brien. Hennessey and Perry restored some pride for the home side with a win over Lewis and Frost in frame five.
Honours were shared in the clash between the Junction A and the Railway Tavern at Norbury and there was a similar 3-3 score line in the match between the Swan and Junction B.
All match forms are to be delivered to the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to Neil Perkins on 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 are now due and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern.
