COLLINS AND KEENAN ROMP INTO POOL SEMI-FINALS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head’s Mick Collins and Ed Keenan cruised into the semi-finals of the Worthington’s Newport Pool Doubles Open with a 3-0 demolition of the Audco’s John Williams and Paul Trevor at Bellman’s Yard.

The home team were the favourites to reach the final for the first time, but they had no answer to the potting prowess of the visitors, who have both reached the quarter-finals of the Coors Newport singles’ competition as well.

Mick Collins had booked his place in the singles quarters with a 3-0 demolition of young Telford player Luke Hayward, although his opponent Ian Perry was taken to a fifth frame decider at Gnosall by Navigation landlord Steve Whitlock.

Whitlock also confirmed that the Gnosall public house will run two league teams in the 2008-2009 Newport Pool League, which gets underway on Wednesday, November 12th.

There are currently 14 confirmed teams and two vacancies for the 16 places in the expanded Newport Pool League. The closing date for entries is Wednesday, October 22nd – the evening of the Coors Newport Pool Open finals at the Audco.

Mick Collins beat Luke Hayward, 3-0
Steve Whitlock lost to Ian Perry, 2-3
