ABU DHABI SET TO HOST OPENING ROUND OF 2019 UIM MOTOSURF WORLD CUP FOR FIRST TIME
· MotoSurf offers low-cost and environmentally friendly new form of on-water motor sport
ABU DHABI (UAE): Wednesday, March 6: Abu Dhabi is set to host the opening round of the 2019 UIM MotoSurf World Cup (MSWC) for the first time on April 4-6.
The UIM MotoSurf World Cup Abu Dhabi 2019 is running through an agreement between the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) and MotoSurf WorldCup (MSWC) – the series promoter – and marks the first time that this exciting and relatively new on-water motor sporting discipline has ever visited the Middle East. The Abu Dhabi event will take place on Breakwater Beach and will be the first of six rounds announced by the promoter with around 60 riders expected to visit the opening round.
Further races are planned for Brno in the Czech Republic (June 6-8), Wyboston Lakes, England (July 5-7), Kazan, Russia (September 13-15), Florida, USA (October 18-20) and Czech Republic TBA (November 15-17), as the series runs under the auspices of the UIM for the first time and takes on the guise of an official World Championship.
The popular location close to the centre of the UAE’s commercial capital already hosts the penultimate round of the UIM F1 H2O World Championship and has played host to aquabikes, XCAT and Class 1 racing in the recent past. It will mark the first opportunity for male and female racers in two MSWC categories to score early season championship points.
The male class will be headed by the talented Czech competitor and 2018 champion Lukáš Záhorský, while Aneta Šacherová fronts the ladies category. Záhorský finished last season 147 points clear of series runner-up Sebastian Kubinec from Slovakia, while fellow Czech Martin Sula finished third. Šacherová, meanwhile, won the female category by 107 points from fellow Czech racer Martina Bravencová. Great Britain’s Anya Colley was third.
The opening round of UIM MotoSurf WorldCup AbuDhabi 2019 will also see a couple of VIPs in action. Yamaha MotoGP Factory Team test rider Jonas Folger will compete under the flag of the Jetsurf Factory Team, as well as seven-time Jet ski World Champion Anya Colley in the women’s class.
The MotoSurf discipline uses ultra lightweight Jetsurf race boards that weigh as little as 18kgs and can easily be transported from venue to venue by individuals. This enables all MSWC racers to travel easily and makes it one of the most economic and environmentally friendly sporting disciplines.
The Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) is supported by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and runs under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Khalifa Al-Nahyan, advisor to the Head of State and chairman of the board of directors and under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Sultan Bin Khalifa Al-Nahyan, Vice-President and CEO of the ADIMSC. The racing team runs under the umbrella of the ADIMSC, board member and general manager Salem Al-Remeithi.
Salem Al-Remeithi said: “This is an exciting new sporting discipline and we are delighted to host the opening round and to be a part of a little piece of history with MotoSurf coming to the Middle East under the UIM umbrella for the first time.”
