JUNCTION B LOCK ON TO WIN AGAINST THREE-MAN ‘SHEAF

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Junction B earned their second win of the season against a three-man Wheatsheaf side in the Newport Pool League title and now trail the Sutherland Arms by a mere point.

The Norbury side were gifted the opener, but Nigel Sandbrook beat James Morris to level. Dave Blount and Ruth Minton then got the better of Al Harvey and Mark Hodgkinson to make it 3-1 and the canal-siders claimed the only doubles frame to seal the win.

Legion A remain a point clear of King’s Head B after dropping just one frame against bottom side Legion B. Simon Walley, George Allen and Mick Manning soared into a 3-0 lead with wins over Barry Smith, Brad Borrett and Mark Kijuk, but Kim Rigby emptied the bar area of the Legion after removing Mick Beech’s trousers in the fourth frame. That’s as good as it got for the B team, however, and Beech safely fastened his belt in the doubles frames and the league leaders confirmed the win.

King’s Head B were made to work hard for two points against the Sutherland Arms. Ryan Langford, Ian Perry and Greg Quinn scorched into a 3-0 lead with wins over Jack Nagington, John Bailey and Karl Hanmer, but Ian Swinnerton, who had been flying high in the singles averages before the game, lost out to Damien Clarke. Nagington and Clarke then set up a nervy final frame by beating Swinnerton and pigeon fancier Quinn, but Perry and Luke Carter came to the home side’s rescue to keep the pressure on Legion A.

King’s Head A survived a scare in Gnosall against the Navigation. An out-of-sorts Graham Tigwell succumbed to a useful Kyle Oldfield clearance, but wins for Mick Collins and Edd Keenan over Dai Smith and Bailey Wright restored the away team’s title push. Jamie Wright then levelled the match with a win over George Smith, but the visiting quartet prevailed in both doubles racks to seal the two points.

The Lamb and Junction A shared the points in Telford. Sion Richards put the visitors in front against Noel Roberts, but John Stanley and George Stokes hit back against Hyla Marklew and Steve Roycroft to make it 2-1. Gordon Sidebotham levelled with a win over Matty Roberts and the home side recovered from losing the first doubles frame to seal the draw.

Legion Yaks were unable to club together enough players to take on the Haberdashers Arms because of work and holiday commitments and the Knighton side benefited with a 0-6 walk-over win.
