LEGION A SEE OFF THE KING’S TO STAY OUT IN FRONT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Legion A disposed of King’s Head A to push their rivals out of near-term contention for the Newport Pool League title. The win keeps the defending champions a point clear of King’s Head B.

Simon Walley and Mick Beech made it 0-2 to the visitors at the expense of Graham Tigwell and George Smith, but Ed Keenan and Mick Collins gave the Legion a mighty fright by getting the better of Mick Manning and George Allen to level. The away side sealed the win with two useful doubles frames.

King’s Head B remain second after a 1-5 win at the Haberdashers Arms. Ian Swinnerton and Luke Carter got the away side off to a winning start against Nathan Shepherd and Janet Lane, but Ryan Langford succumbed to Jon Mason and the score was 1-2. Chris Thompson got the better of Mike Caswell to make it 1-3 and Ian Perry joined the fray for the King’s Head in rack five as both doubles frames went in their favour.

Legion Yaks bounced back from last week’s fiasco to trounce Legion B without losing a frame. Chris Nolan, Ross Richards-Jones, Stu Morrey and Dean Smith got the better of Barry Smith, Brad Borrett, Mark Kijuk and Kim Rigby to make it 4-0 and the doubles went the same way.

The Navigation took a firm grip on fourth place with a 2-4 win over the Wheatsheaf. Al Harvey undid Bailey Wright’s belt to give the ‘Sheaf the opening frame, but Kyle Oldfield, Dai Smith and Jamie Wright prevailed in the next three frames to put the Gnosall side 1-3 up with wins over Nigel Sandbrook, Paul Skitt and Ant Heathcote, the latter losing his unbeaten start to the season. Oldfield and Jamie Wright sealed the win in frame five, but Harvey and Skitt won the last rack for the home team.

The A team clinched a 4-2 win in the Junction derby in Norbury. Sion Richards started the car with a win over Dave Blount, but Ryan Morris hit back to level at the expense of Hyla Marklew. The topsy-turvy contest continued with Steve Roycroft beating James Morris to make it 2-1 and Ruth Minton levelling against Gordon Sidebotham. The A team quartet ground out the doubles frames to seal the local bragging rights.

Honours were shared in the clash between the Sutherland Arms and the Lamb. Nathan Roberts put the Telford team ahead against Sam Sampson, but Jon Bailey levelled the score with a win over John Stanley. Matty Roberts again put the Wrockwardine Wood side in front against Jack Nagington, but Damien Clarke beat George Stokes to make it 2-2. Nathan Roberts and Stanley made it 2-3 in the opening doubles encounter, but Gareth Thomas joined the home attack and he and Nagington stroked the balls home to seal a draw.
