LAMB SEAL GRUDGE ENCOUNTER AGAINST THE ‘DASHERS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Lamb at Wrockwardine Wood sealed a 4-2 win over the visiting Haberdashers Arms in the first meeting of the sides in the Newport Pool League since John Stanley moved to the Telford team.

The home side made the perfect start with Nathan Roberts and Stanley winning the opening frames against Janet Lane and Ayla Mason. Nathan Shepherd got the better of Graham Stokes to make it 2-1, but Matty Roberts snatched a vital fourth rack against Jon Mason and it was 3-1. Kris Lewis joined the home side in frame five to put the result beyond doubt, but the visitors won the last rack.

Legion A remain clear at the top after a 5-1 win over the Wheatsheaf. Mick Beech, Mick Manning and Simon Walley put the defending champions into a 3-0 lead with wins over Al Harvey, Nigel Sandbrook and Paul Skitt, but Ant Heathcote whipped George Allen’s trousers off to give the away side a lifeline. That was as good as it got for the ‘Sheaf, however, and both doubles racks went to the home side.

King’s Head B remain second on frame difference after trouncing the pitiful Legion Yaks. Ryan Langford, Luke Carter and Ian Perry raced into a 3-0 lead at the expense of Dean Smith, Ross Richards-Jones and Chris Nolan and, despite pulling Simon Drinkwater from the bar to make up the numbers for the visitors, Ian Swinnerton made it 4-0. There was no respite in the doubles either and Smith skulked out of the bar with his tail between his legs after the rout was complete.

King’s Head A remain in third place after dropping two frames on their trip to Legion B. George Taylor put the visitors in front against Barry Smith, only for Brad Borrett to stun Graham Tigwell and make it 1-1. Mick Collins and George Smith got the better of Mark Kijuk and Kim Rigby to make it 1-3, but the introduction of Ed Keenan didn’t have the desired effect for the away side in the doubles and the Legion pulled one frame back.

The Navigation won a marathon safety contest against Junction A by the odd frame. Sion Richards found a way to beat the in-form Kyle Oldfield to put the away side ahead, but Bailey and Jamie Wright and Dai Smith made it 3-1 with wins over Steve Roycroft, Hyla Marklew and Gordon Sidebotham. Richards and Marklew set up a tense finale by getting the better of Oldfield and Sean Casey in frame five, but the Wright brothers managed to land the win safety in the final frame.

The Sutherland Arms notched up a useful 4-2 win over the Junction B in Norbury. James Morris beat Matt Cowap to make it 1-0, but the Suthy’s Damien Clarke and Jack Nagington hit back to dispose of Dave Blount and Ryan Morris to make it 1-2. Ruth Minton got the better of Sam Sampson to level the match, but Karl Hanmer joined the away line-up in the doubles and the villagers sealed both frames.
