LEGION A TROUSER ANOTHER LEAGUE WIN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Legion A dropped just one frame against Junction A on their way to a seventh win in eight games in the Newport Pool League.
The away victory keeps the defending champions one point in front of their King’s Head rivals. But skipper and Shropshire A supremo George Allen will be visiting his tailors for the second successive week to buy a new belt after his trousers were removed in the opener by Sion Richards.
That’s as good as it got for the home side, however, with Simon Walley, Mick Beech and Mick Manning rattling off the next three frames for the Legion against Steve Roycroft, Hyla Marklew and Gordon Sidebotham and both doubles frames going to the visitors.
King’s Head B remain in second place on frame difference after a 5-1 win over the Lamb. Ian Swinnerton and Ian Perry made it 2-0 with wins over George Stokes and Matt Roberts, but Noel Roberts was under instruction to ‘Get Carter’ and he fulfilled the task to beat Luke Carter to make it 2-1. Ryan Langford then beat Kris Lewis to make it 3-1 and there was no way back for the Wrockwardine Wood side in the doubles frames.
King’s Head A managed to edge a 2-4 win against Legion Yaks. Neil Perkins gifted two shots to Graham Tigwell after a snooker on his final yellow and the away player cleared the table to make it 0-1 and Mick Collins made it two against an out-of-sorts Legion debutant Jason Shilcock.
George Smith rode his luck to snatch the third frame from Stu Morrey to make it 0-3, but Dean Smith gave the home side a fighting chance at the expense of Ed Keenan. Collins and George Taylor sealed the match in a tense fifth frame against Morrey and Shilcock, but Perkins and Smith pulled the sixth frame back against Smith and Tigwell.
The Navigation remain fourth after dropping two frames at the Sutherland Arms. Kyle Oldfield got the better of Damien Clarke to make it 0-1, only for Jon Bailey to redress the balance against Bailey Wright. Jamie Wright and Dai Smith disposed of Matt Cowap and Jack Nagington to make it 1-3 and the doubles frames were shared after the Wright brothers had taken off to win the match in rack five.
The Wheatsheaf climbed to sixth with a 4-2 win over Legion B. Barry Smith stunned Al Harvey to make it 0-1, but wins for Nigel Sandbrook, Mark Hodgkinson and Ant Heathcote over Brad Borrett, Mark Kijuk and Kim Rigby made it 3-1. Smith and Borrett set up a nervy finale by winning frame five, but Hodgkinson and Heathcote prevailed in the last rack to seal the win.
The Haberdashers Arms climbed to fifth with a 4-2 win over Junction B. Jon Mason got the home side off to a winning start against Ryan Morris, but James Morris levelled at the expense of Nathan Shepherd. Ayla Mason then potted a black double to beat Dave Blount to make it 2-1, only for Ruth Minton to stun the in-form Janet Lane to level with another black double. The home team dug deep in the doubles frames to seal the match.
