LEGION A KEEP THE KINGS OFF THE THRONE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Legion A remain one point clear of the two King’s Head sides after dropping just one frame in a 5-1 win over the Sutherland Arms in week seven of the Newport Pool League.

The contest was settled in the singles frames with wins for George Allen, Simon Walley, Colin Farge and Mick Beech over Damien Clarke, Jack Nagington, Karl Hanmer and Jon Bailey. The league leaders clinched both doubles racks as well, despite the introduction of the shaven sensation Gareth Thomas in frame five.

King’s Head B whitewashed Junction B in a game where the score line flattered some of the frame performances. Ian Swinnerton, Ian Perry, Luke Carter and Greg Quinn did the damage in the opening four frames against James Morris, Dave Blount, Ryan Morris and Ruth Minton and the quartet also prevailed in the doubles frames. The result moved King’s Head B into second place on frame difference.

King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw by a stubborn Wheatsheaf side. Graham Tigwell and Mick Collins made it 2-0 to the home side with wins over Nigel Sandbrook and Al Harvey, but Ant Heathcote benefited from a canny break to muscle in on Ed Keenan to make it 1-2. George Smith restored the home side’s two-frame cushion at the expense of Paul Skitt, but the visitors won both doubles racks after Collins teamed up with George Taylor and prematurely knocked the black down in the final frame after Heathcote and Skitt had triumphed over Keenan and Tigwell in rack five.

The Navigation pipped Haberdashers Arms in a tense encounter in Gnosall. Janet Lane continued her impressive form to beat Bailey Wright and make it 0-1, but Kyle Oldfield and Jamie Wright hit back against Mike Caswell and Nathan Shepherd to make it 2-1. Ayla Mason discovered that the Welsh wizard Dai Smith had lost a little of his magic to level the scores. The home side won both doubles frames, following the introduction of Aaron Wright for the home side and Jon Mason for the visitors in rack six.

Legion Yaks were forced to work mightily hard for a 2-4 win at the Lamb in Wrockwardine Wood. Dean Smith found a way to edge his frame against Noel Roberts to put the visitors ahead, but a solid John Stanley clearance against Neil Perkins levelled the score. Kevin Genner survived some shaky moments to get the better of Matty Roberts to make it 1-2 but Graham Stokes edged a tense fourth rack against Stu Morrey to level. The visitors somehow prevailed in both doubles tussles, with Smith and Richards-Jones pipping the Roberts duo and Perkins and Genner edging out Stanley and Stokes in a tense finale.

Bottom club Legion B suffered a 1-5 home defeat to Junction A. Hyla Marklew, Steve Roycroft, Gordon Sidebotham and Sion Richards won the singles frames at the expense of Barry Smith, Brad Borrett, Mark Kijuk and Kim Rigby. The home side had the scant consolation of a first doubles frame win for Smith and Borrett over Roycroft and Sidebotham.
