LEGION A HELD BY KING’S HEAD B IN TABLE-TOPPER
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Legion A were held to a 3-3 draw in a tense top-of-the-table clash in week five of the Newport Pool League.
The home team remain unbeaten and top of the table on frame difference and they got off to a good start. Simon Walley and Mick Beech trampled on the ever-improving Ryan Langford and Luke Carter to make it 2-0. Greg Quinn and Ian Perry steadied the King’s Head B’s listing ship with wins over the experienced Mick Manning and George Allen and levelled the match. Langford and Quinn then put the away team ahead in rack five, but Manning and Walley stamped their authority on the last frame to perforate the King’s Head’s chance of victory.
King’s Head A remain on the coat tails of the leaders and now trail on frame difference after dropping two frames in a 4-2 home win over the Sutherland Arms. Damian Clarke stunned Mick Collins to put the away team ahead, but wins for Graham Tigwell, George Smith and George Taylor over Jon Bailey, Matt Cowap and Jack Nagington gave the home side the edge. Edd Keenan and Irene Whittington sealed the match in frame five, but the away team quickly sobered the home players with a win over Tigwell and Andy Prinold.
The Navigation continued their resurgence with a 4-2 win over the Lamb. Kyle Oldfield, Dai Smith and Bailey Wright gave the Gnosall side a 3-0 lead with wins over Kris Lewis, John Stanley and George Stokes but Matty Roberts beat Jamie Wright to give the Wrockwardine Wood side a lifeline. Oldfield and Jamie Wright sealed the points in the fifth, only for Lewis and Stokes to grab the final frame for the visitors.
A makeshift Legion Yaks side came away from Junction B with two points. Ryan Morris got the better of Dean Smith to give the home team an early lead, but Ryan Genner beat Dave Blount to level. James Morris undressed Ross Richards-Jones to put the Norbury side back on top, only for Kevin Genner to level against Ruth Minton. The away team managed to edge the two doubles frames with Joanne Genner teaming up with her husband in the last frame.
The Wheatsheaf and Junction A fought out an entertaining draw at Chetwynd End. Al Harvey continued his run of good form to beat Hyla Marklew and make it 1-0, only for Steve Roycroft to level against Paul Skitt. Ant Heathcote and Nigel Sandbrook went on to make it 3-1 with wins over Gordon Sidebotham and Sion Richards, but the Norbury side hit back to snatch the draw with two doubles frame wins.
Legion B suffered a disparaging 1-5 home defeat to the Haberdashers Arms. The home team found themselves 0-3 down before Kim Rigby could say boo to a goose with Ryan Rigby, Barry Smith and Mark Kijuk losing out to Ayla Mason, Janet Lane and Jon Mason. Kim Rigby stunned Mike Casewell to give the Legion a lifeline, but the away team prevailed in the doubles frames with Nathan Shepherd joining the line-up in rack six.
