SOUTH RACING TO RUN CAN-AMS FOR OMANI AND NORTH
AMERICAN TEAMS AT SPAIN’S BAJA ARAGÓN TERUEL
TERUEL (SPAIN): South Racing will run three Can-Am Maverick X3s for one Middle Eastern and two North American teams at this weekend’s Baja Aragón Teruel.
The company will run three Dakar-specification Can-Am Maverick X3s in the Spanish National Championship event that runs alongside the seventh round of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies. This will be the first major outing for the Can-Am arm of South Racing since the team’s impressive and dominant victory at the Merzouga Rally in April.
Oman’s Abdullah Al-Zubair and navigator Faisal Raisi – who won round two of the Manateq Qatar National Baja in April – crew the first of the X3s.
They will be joined in the punishing heat and dust of central Spain by the female crew of Christine Giampaoli and Luy Galán and American driver Austin Jones and his Mexican navigator René Hernandez in a third X3.
Giampaoli and Galán have been racing Stateside in the UTV Turbo Pro category with California-based Dynamic Racing and have tackled events such as the Baja 500, Baja 1000 and Vegas to Reno in addition to several special stage rallies in Europe. Born in India and now living in the Canary Islands, Giampaoli and her Spanish co-driver join South Racing for the first time.
Jones comes from a motor sporting family in the USA – his father Jesse Jones won several events in the Trophy Trucks category and is a well known face in American off-road racing – and Austin is cutting his teeth in cross-country rallying after winning his class in Trophy Trucks at the Baja 500. This first step into the European side of off-road racing could mark the start of an exciting future for the Californian youngster.
South Racing’s managing director Scott Abraham said: “We have a fully international team on the Can-Am side of things. It is the next big race after running the cars at the Merzouga Rally in Morocco.
“Because of the restrictions on running turbo engines in the T3 category, we are forced to run in the National category. We still have a great international line-up with two US teams and a Middle East team and this shows the scope and the reach of the side-by-side (SxS) category and is definitely positive for the future.”
The competitive action in the FIA section gets underway with a timed 13.46km super special stage, near Teruel, on Friday evening.
The bulk of the 521.42km of action takes place on revised stages on Saturday (July 21) and Sunday (July 22). There are two selective sections of 227.51km and 154.85km on Saturday and one of 125.60km on Sunday before the podium ceremony in Teruel later in the afternoon.
