SPORTTRAXX RAISES THE BAR IN GPS TRACKING AT ABU DHABI DESERT CHALLENGE

100% of competitors monitored live over five days in UAE desert

TRENTO (ITALY): Sporttraxx, the Italian results and tracking company, used the recent Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge – a round of both the FIA and FIM World Cross-Country Championships – to utilise further improvements with the innovative Sporttraxx YB tracking solution.

One year after introducing the twinned Sporttraxx YB GSM+Satellite tracking solution to an FIA/FIM World Championship event for the first time, subtle improvements to the system included a new special bag to permit the installation of the YB3 satellite tracker on bikes and quads and a new GPRS portable tracker with extended battery and reduced size and weight that could be carried on the riders themselves to monitor the biker and the bike.

For the cars, the YB3 and the Sporttraxx GPRS tracker were installed together in a new strong bracket to adhere to new FIA safety requirements.

Sporttraxx took advantage of its 13 years’ experience in fast GPRS tracking to extend its operational coverage to the whole race field by partnering with the world renowned YB Iridium Tracking technology.

The system was able to use a new positioning rate of five seconds in GSM covered areas in addition to four GPS positions transmitted every two minutes with the Iridium network. This enabled rally control to ‘see the action’. Due to this increased reliability, control over the competitors reached 100% accuracy over the entire race route over five days in the desert.

In 2016, this technology enabled Sporttraxx to become the first GPS tracking supplier to obtain the FIM Certification Type A that will become a compulsory requirement in forthcoming years.

The system also offers total reliability for race officials and means that all competitors are monitored all of the time – from the start to the finish of the day and overnight.

It enabled the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge’s medical rescue team to be faster and even more efficient in dealing with emergency cases. The technology was also of major benefit to organisers’ vehicles, media operators and heicopter crews and worked in tangent with the Sporttraxx live timing and results service.
