KING’S HEAD B THRASH WHEATSHEAF TO SEAL POOL PLATE TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): King’s Head B retained their composure to win the final match of the season in the Marstons Newport & District Pool League and that was sufficient for the Chetwynd End side to snatch the Plate title from the Wheatsheaf.
Veteran skipper Ian Perry celebrated his birthday in emphatic style with a whitewash victory. He got the better of Paul Skitt to put the King’s Head B into the lead and wins for Luke Carter, Lorna Phee and Ryan Langford over Al Harvey, Nigel Sandbrook and Andy Wakefield sealed the silverware and the win.
Market Drayton’s Stag rounded off their second championship-winning season with a narrow 4-2 win over Honeysuckle Harriers, who finished a creditable fourth. George Allen produced a solid clearance to upstage Russ Woodhouse and Neil Dale cleared well to dismiss Greg Quinn. Owen Rigby held his nerve under pressure to give the Harriers a lifeline against Chris Thompson, but a crucial missed pot by Dean Smith let Mick Manning in to seal a point and confirm that he lost just one match all season.
Neil Perkins and Smith potted well to beat Dale and Manning to make it 3-2, but Allen and Thompson sealed the points after Quinn ran up short on a simple snooker attempt and ceded two shots.
Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms had already confirmed second place and they visited third-placed Newport Legion on the final night of the season. Simon Walley gave the home side the perfect start at the expense of Andy Fishwick, but wins for Ian Swinnerton, Tom Fisken and Wayne Dodd over Chris Eaton, Mick Beech and Ant Heathcote swung the pendulum in favour of the away side.
Beech and Walley set up a grandstand finale by winning the fifth rack to make it 2-3, but Swinnerton and Dodd (the new Shropshire County Seniors’ signing) sealed the points in the last frame.
Honeysuckle Hawks rounded off their league campaign with a stunning defeat at the hands of the Royal Navy Club. Not expecting lightning to strike twice after the Navy Club’s recent victory over Newport Legion, the Hawks were wrong-footed from the start and the defeat dropped them to seventh behind WWFC.
“I don’t know what to say,” said ‘Suckle landlord Andy Bowsher. “It should have been a comfortable win, but the Navy Club used their military experience I guess to unbuckle our belts and pull our trousers down around our ankles.”
WWFC finished sixth after visiting the Haberdashers Arms on the final night and securing a 1-5 win, with Craig Williams, Kevin Genner, Stuart Robinson and Tom Vernon playing for the away side against Janet Lane, Nathan Shepherd, Dave Heeley and Darren Carter.
Junction A got the better of the Pheasant in Norbury with the loss of one frame. The Norbury side stormed into a 5-0 lead, but Craig Hutchinson and Tom Sayce saved the away team’s blushes with a consolation final frame.
Junction B rounded off a topsy-turvy year with a 4-2 win at the Shakespeare, but there were byes for King’s Head A and Gnosall’s Horns.
The league presentation and the finals of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy and Shield take place on Friday, July 8th at the Royal Navy Club from 19.00hrs.
