FAUX PAS FOR ALLEN BUT STAG ON THE BRINK OF TITLE GLORY
NEWPORT (Shropshire): A comfortable home win over the Royal Navy Club has moved Market Drayton’s Stag to within one win of retaining their Marstons Newport & District Pool League title.
Skipper George Allen got over excited at the thought of playing ball with Mark Kijuk and potted the black too early without giving his opponent a shot. But that’s as good as it got for the visitors. Mick Manning and Charlie Hayward got the better of Dan Piper and Ben Garrott and Neil Dale eight-balled Allen Pritchett to make it 3-1. Dale and Manning made it four in the first doubles frame and Hayward and Allen sealed the rout against Pritchett and Gerry Nunn.
The Sutherland Arms kept up the pressure with a hard-earned victory at Junction B, but now have to win their remaining four matches and hope that the Stag can only draw one of their remaining four games.
Jack Hooper and Ian Swinnerton put the away team into a 0-2 lead, only for Ryan Morris to give the home side a fighting chance. Wayne Dodd made it 1-3, but Dave Blount and Steve Purves pulled the fifth frame back for the Junction to set up a nail biting finish. Tom Fisken and Dodd duly held their nerve to seal the two points.
Newport Legion are still one point behind the Suthy in third place after getting the better of the Pheasant. Simon Walley, Colin Farge, Chris Eaton and Mick Beech won all four singles racks at the expense of Craig Hutchinson, Alistair Griffiths, Gaz Davies and Tom Sayce and it was a similar pattern in the doubles.
Honeysuckle Harriers retain fourth place heading into their final four matches after disposing of the Shakespeare. Dean Smith opened the batting by beating Barry Smith, Neil Perkins edged a tight second against Graham Parsons to make it 2-0 and Russ Woodhouse was fortunate to overcome Mitch Burgess to make it three. Greg Quinn sealed the win against Kim Rigby and Owen Rigby joined Quinn, Woodhouse and Perkins to win both doubles frames.
King’s Head A are three points behind and have played one game more after they suffered a crushing defeat at Honeysuckle Hawks. Stu Morrey, Gaz Lewis, Marcus Thomas and Jason Shilcock stunned Bobby Perry, Mick Collins, Irene Whittington and Alex Davidson in the singles frames to make it 4-0, although the King’s restored some pride by winning both the doubles racks.
King’s Head B were swept aside by WWFC in Telford in what turned out to be a major blow to their chances of winning the Newport Pool League Plate. Craig Williams, Stu Robinson, Chris Nolan and Kevin Genner did the damage against Adam Barnes, Ryan Langford, Lorna Phee and Luke Carter in the singles racks and it was also one-way traffic in the doubles.
Plate-topping Horns visited second-placed Wheatsheaf in a crucial clash to determine the destiny of the league’s competitive second tier and the Chetwynd Aston side earned a superb 5-1 victory to move to the top of the league.
Nigel Sandbrook set them on their way against Jamie Wright, only for Dai Smith to level against Al Harvey. Andy Wakefield and Paul Skitt put the home team into a 3-1 lead with wins over David Jolley and Charles Minors and the quartet added both doubles frames to seal a memorable win.
There were byes for Junction A and the Haberdashers Arms.
