SUTHY AND LEGION WIN BUT STAG SET TO CLINCH POOL TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Stag will move within two points of winning the Marstons Newport & District Pool League next Wednesday night if they can overcome the Royal Navy Club in their home match.
Despite not playing last Wednesday, the defending champions remain six points clear of the Sutherland Arms, who beat King’s Head B in Tibberton by the odd frame. Both teams have five matches still to play.
Ian Perry put the visitors in front against Matt Mansell, but Ian Swinnerton, Jack Hooper and Wayne Dodd hit back with wins over Ryan Langford, Lorna Phee and Luke Carter to make it 3-1. Perry and Phee overcame Andy Fishwick and Swinnerton to send the match into a deciding frame. Fisken and Dodd duly did the business against Langford and Carter to clinch the two points.
Newport Legion returned to winning ways with a thumping 0-6 win over Junction A in Norbury. Romeo Simon Walley, Mick Beech, Chris Eaton and Ant Heathcote sealed the points with wins over Steve Roycroft, Hyla Marklew, Gordon Sidebotham and Sion Richards.
WWFC entertained a depleted Honeysuckle Harriers in Telford and relinquished a 3-1 lead in a tense match on an excellent table. Craig Williams won a black ball frame against Greg Quinn to make it 1-0, only for Russ Woodhouse to level with a win over Stuart Robinson.
Kevin Genner tactically undid Dean Smith to make it 2-1 and Adam Bailey missed a seven-ball clearance and opened the door for Chris Nolan to clear and make it 3-1. Bailey and Smith gave the Harriers the lifeline against Robinson and Williams and Quinn and Woodhouse sealed the point.
Honeysuckle Hawks won a hard match against a defiant Shakespeare by the odd frame. Stuart Morrey and Jason Shilcock were singles frames winners in a match that went to 2-2 after Barry Smith and Mitch Burgess had stunned Ross Richards-Jones and Mark Groom. But Groom played well alongside Jones to make it 3-2 in the first of the doubles frames and landlord Andy Bowsher teamed up with Shilcock to seal the final frame and the match.
Horns shared the spoils in a tight match with Junction B at the Navigation. Jamie Wright’s win over James Morris was cancelled out by Dave Blount getting the better of Martyn Holford. David Jolly put the Horns back in front against Steve Purves, but Ryan Morris undid Dai Smith to make it 2-2. Wright and Jolley gave the home side the upper hand by winning the fifth, but the Morris duo prevailed in frame six to seal a point. The Horns lead the Newport League Plate on frame difference.
The Haberdashers Arms visited the Pheasant and were beaten 4-2 by the home side in a raucous atmosphere. Craig Hutchinson set the home team on their way at the expense of Nathan Shepherd, but Janet Lane and Dave Heeley hit back with wins over Alistair Griffiths and Gaz Davies. Luke Jones levelled by beating Darren Carter and the home quartet maintained their form to win both doubles frames.
The Wheatsheaf catapulted themselves into contention for the Newport League Plate title by beating the Royal Navy Club by the odd frame, but there were byes the Stag and King’s Head A.
