STAG STAY ON COURSE FOR REPEAT POOL LEAGUE DOUBLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Stag remain firmly on course for a second successive pool double-winning season after they disposed of the Sutherland Arms without conceding a frame in the semi-final of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy last Tuesday evening at the Shakespeare. They then crushed the Pheasant the following night to extend their lead to eight points in the Marston’s Newport Pool League with five games to play.
George Allen, Mick Manning, Neil Dale and Ricky Leece got the better of Andy Fishwick, Ian Swinnerton, Tom Fisken and Wayne Dodd to seal the Stag’s place in the final against the Honeysuckle Hawks. Allen, Manning, Dale and Ollie Bennett then snatched the league points from the Pheasant after disposing of Craig Hutchinson, Tom Sayce, Alistair Griffiths and Gaz Davies. The Stag have a bye next week., but a win in two weeks’ time will be enough to confirm the league title.
The Sutherland Arms visited Honeysuckle Harriers in a match that may well decide second or third place at the end of the season. The Tibberton side won a grueller by the odd frame and benefited from another Newport Legion defeat to climb to second place.
Andy Fishwick edged a scrappy black ball opener against Neil Perkins to make it 0-1, but Dean Smith held his nerve to level at the expense of Ian Swinnerton. Greg Quinn outplayed Tom Fisken to make it 2-1, but Wayne Dodd levelled with a win over Russ Woodhouse. Two tense doubles matches went in favour of the away side, with the Harriers losing their first league match in nine weeks.
Newport Legion entertained King’s Head A and suffered another home nightmare. Bobby Perry and Irene Whittington undid Chris Eaton and Anthony Heathcote to make it 0-2, although Simon Walley responded well to pull a frame back against Ed Keenan. Trevor Smith then made it 1-3 against Mick Beech but Walley and Heathcote beat Smith and Whittington to make it 2-3. Keenan and Mick Collins then sealed the match in the sixth with a win over Eaton and Beech.
WWFC stayed on the coat tails of the top six with a convincing 5-1 win over the Shakespeare. Dave Holding, Craig Williams, Kevin Genner and Tom Vernon did the damage against Barry Smith, Graham Parsons, Mitch Burgess and Kim Rigby in the singles. Ryan and Kevin Genner made it five, but Williams potted the black and the white in the sixth to hand the home team a consolation frame.
King’s Head B hosted the Horns in a vital clash at the top of the Marston’s Newport Plate League table and put the visitors to the sword with an impressive 5-1 win to take a one-point league lead into their final six games.
Junction B subjected the Royal Navy Club to a similar beating in Norbury and the Haberdashers Arms mauled Junction A by the same 5-1 score line in Knighton to move into contention for the title. Just two points separates the top five teams.
There were byes for the Honeysuckle Hawks and the Wheatsheaf.
