LEADING TWO BOTH WIN AS SUTHERLAND ARMS REGAIN THIRD
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag overcame the tricky hurdle of a visit to Honeysuckle Hawks to maintain their three-point lead in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League with eight games to go.
The defending champions dropped just one frame. George Allen and Mick Manning got the better of Andy McGee and Mark Groom to make it 0-2, but Marcus Thomas pulled a frame back to give the home side a glimmer of hope. When Neil Dale ousted Gary Lewis, the writing was already on the wall and the Drayton quartet won both the doubles racks to seal the 1-5 win.
Newport Legion cannot afford one tiny slip up on the run in if they are to stand any chance of snatching the title. Mick Beech’s side put the Shakespeare to the sword to seal the two points, despite the captain prematurely potting the black in the final frame to gift the away side a consolation.
Simon Walley, Colin Farge, Mick Beech and Chris Eaton made it 4-0 and Farge and Walley won the fifth before Beech’s error in the sixth against Mitch Burgess and Jess Rigby.
Sutherland Arms climbed back to third with a hard-earned 2-4 win at the Horns in Gnosall. Ian Swinnerton and Jack Hooper put the visitors into a 0-2 lead at the expense of Jamie Wright and Kevin Thackwell, but Dai Smith played the captain’s role well to defeat Andy Fishwick and make it 1-2.
Wayne Dodd sealed the vital fourth frame with a win over Martyn Holford and Tom Fisken and Dodd confirmed the two points by beating Wright and Thackwell in the first of the doubles. Holford and Smith sealed the final frame for the home team.
The Royal Navy Club were no match for an in-form WWFC, who closed the gap on the Hawks and sixth place to two points. Craig Williams, Stuart Robinson, Kevin Genner and Chris Nolan did the damage in the four singles frames against Jez Price, Dan Piper, Ben Garrott and Alan Pritchett and it was similar one-way traffic in the doubles frames with Tom Vernon and young Ryan Genner joining the rout in the sixth.
Honours in the all-Junction clash at Norbury were shared by two of the most difficult sides in the league to breakdown.
The Pheasant entertained King’s Head B in the final match of the night and the away side prevailed by the odd frame to earn their third win of the season.
The result of the match between King’s Head A and the Wheatsheaf was not available as we closed for press and there were byes for Honeysuckle Harriers and Haberdashers Arms.
