STAG HUMBLE LEGION TO CLOSE IN ON LEAGUE POOL TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag knew the importance of earning a result in their top-of-the-table clash with Newport Legion in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League, but even skipper George Allen did not imagine they would come away with a 0-6 win and move five points clear in the league.
The damage was done in four clinical singles frames by Allen, Mick Manning, Neil Dale and Kyle Smith with a hapless Simon Walley, Chris Eaton, Mick Beech and Ant Heathcote falling victim on this occasion. There was no respite in the doubles either, even though Jack Dicken joined the fray for the home side in rack five.
Honeysuckle Harriers took advantage of a bye for Sutherland Arms to climb into third place on frames scored after the longest match of the entire season against Junction A in Norbury. Neil Perkins and Dean Smith took an hour to undo Hyla Marklew and Sion Richards to make it 0-2, although another 30-minute encounter resulted in Steve Roycroft pipping Russ Woodhouse to make it 1-2.
Owen Rigby put the away side back in front on the two-hour mark against Gordon Sidebotham. Richards cleared well alongside Marklew to beat Greg Quinn and Rigby and make it 2-3, but Smith edged a tense final rack well after 11pm when Roycroft missed a crucial pot to level the match after Perkins had botched a clearance.
King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw by their ever improving B team, but remain in contention for third place.
Honeysuckle Hawks edged a tense match against Junction B. Ryan Morris won the first frame for the canal siders but it went downhill from then on for the visitors, after home wins for Jason Shilcock, Marcus Thomas and Gary Lewis and a pair of doubles successes for Thomas and Ross-Richards Jones and Shilcock and Lewis.
The Pheasant hosted in-form WWFC, but the Telford side earned a third successive 0-6 win, courtesy of singles rack successes for Craig Williams, Stu Robinson, Kevin Genner and Tom Vernon against Alistair Griffiths, Craig Hutchinson, Gaz Davies and Tom Sayce.
Gnosall’s Horns maintained their quest for the Newport Pool League Plate title with a thumping 0-6 away win at the Royal Navy Club. Wins for Jamie Wright, Martyn Holford, David Jolley and Dai Smith sealed the two points and the quartet continued to run riot in the doubles frames.
The Haberdashers Arms got the better of the Shakespeare with the loss of one frame in the final match of the evening and climbed to second place in the Newport Pool League Plate. There were byes for the Wheatsheaf and the Sutherland Arms.
Newport Legion’s reward for coming back from 3-1 down to snatch a thrilling tiebreak victory in their quarterfinal tie with Honeysuckle Harriers in the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy was a draw against Honeysuckle Hawks. The Sutherland Arms will play the Stag in the other match.
Russ Woodhouse had a straightforward pair of reds and an easy black to seal the match 4-2 for the Harriers in the last doubles frame, but it was not to be and it eventually took a 30-minute safety battle by Ant Heathcote to overcome Neil Perkins in the tie-breaker to book NRBL’s place in the last four.
The winners of Friday’s game between the Wheatsheaf and King’s Head A will face the Shakespeare in the semi-final of the Neil Clark Consolation Shield. Haberdashers Arms play WWFC in the other match. Games must be played by the end of May.
