STAG AND LEGION LOCKED IN BATTLE HEADING FOR SHOWDOWN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag could put one hand on the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League title next week when they visit second-placed Newport Legion.
The two teams both earned 5-1 wins last Wednesday night and are separated by three points and the odd frame. Victory for the Stag would give them a five-point cushion. A win for the Legion would throw the contest wide open again.
George Allen, Mick Manning Ollie Bennett and Neil Dale sealed the match for the Stag in the singles frames against the Haberdashers’s Nathan Shepherd, Darren Carter, John Stanley and Janet Lane, although Stanley and Lane beat Allen and Bennett in rack six to earn a consolation frame.
The Wheatsheaf provided the opposition for Newport Legion, although Simon Walley and Colin Farge put the visitors into a 0-2 lead over Al Harvey and Andy Wakefield. Paul Skitt gave the home side hope against Jack Dicken, but Mick Beech undid Nigel Sandbrook to make it 1-3 and the visiting quartet won both doubles frames.
A poor cloth spoiled the opening three frames of the match between fifth-placed Honeysuckle Harriers and fourth-placed King’s Head A, but it was the home side that responded better to seal a clinical 5-1 win.
Russ Woodhouse upset the King’s plans by outpotting Bobby Perry to make it 1-0 and Neil Perkins should have made it two, but for the white rolling out of position on the final black. Irene Whittington kept her cool, eventually got the two shots she needed and impressively took out all eight balls at her first attempt to level the match.
Dean Smith missed two chances to beat Mick Collins and was then gifted the frame when Collins potted the black and the white together. The table was adjusted for frame four and Greg Quinn ground out the win over Ed Keenan to make it 3-1.
Owen Rigby and Quinn bonded well to seal the match against Trevor Smith and Whittington in the fifth and Smith, partnered by Perkins, rubbed salt into the open wound for Keenan and Collins with a good clearance in the sixth rack, as the Harriers regained fourth place with a game in hand.
Sutherland Arms retain third after thrashing the Pheasant in Tibberton. Andy Fishwick, Matt Mansell, Tom Fisken and Wayne Dodd did the damage to seal the match and Jack Hooper joined the fray in frame five. It was not the best of weeks for the Pheasant. They also lost their Neil Clark Consolation Shield match, 4-0, at WWFC.
WWFC’s new skipper Craig Williams has masterminded the Telford team’s change in fortune and they put the hungry Junction A to the sword without losing a frame. Neil Pugh, Stuart Robinson, Craig Williams and Tom Vernon beat Hyla Marklew, Steve Roycroft, Gordon Sidebotham and Sion Richards to make it 4-0 and Chris Nolan joined the action in the doubles racks.
The Royal Navy Club edged their match with the Shakespeare, 2-4, to move into fifth place in the Newport Pool League Plate. Honours were shared in a tense match between King’s Head B and Honeysuckle Hawks at Chetwynd End.
There were byes for Junction B and the Horns, although the Horns maintain the lead in the Newport League Plate and have a game in hand.
