STAG BEGIN TO EDGE CLEAR AS LEGION HELD BY JUNCTION B
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The gap between Market Drayton’s Stag and Newport Legion at the top of the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League grew to three points last Wednesday night.
The Stag cruised passed the lowly Shakespeare with the loss of one frame, but Newport Legion were held to a 3-3 draw by a valiant Junction B.
George Allen, Mick Manning, Ollie Bennett and Neil Dale sealed the win for the Stag in the four singles frames, but the Shake’s consolation came in the fifth when Kim Rigby and Graham Parsons made Bennett and Allen blush.
Newport Legion found themselves 0-2 down for the second week in three and fought back well to seal the draw. Chris Eaton and Ant Heathcote were undone by Ryan Morris and Mick Ashforth, although Jack Dicken pulled the third frame back by beating James Morris. Dave Blount then found a way to pluck Simon Walley’s feathers in frame four and the Junction headed into the doubles with at least a draw.
Skipper Mick Beech teamed up with Heathcote to beat the Morris men to make it 2-3 and Dicken and Eaton earned the point against an ever-improving Junction B with a last frame win over Steve Purves and Ashforth.
The Sutherland Arms booked their place in the semi-finals of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy alongside Honeysuckle Hawks and the Stag last Tuesday evening with a 1-4 victory over Junction B. They then return to Norbury the following evening to take on Junction A and earned a 3-3 draw.
King’s Head A snatched fourth place from Honeysuckle Harriers by default. WWFC were struggling for players in the days running up the fixture and, rather than field less than the necessary four and miss out on the two-point deduction, the Telford side cancelled at the 11th hour and handed the walkover win to the Newport side.
The Harriers had three of their regular six players missing in their local derby clash with the Hawks, but managed to scrape a draw in a sixth-frame blackball thriller. Russ Woodhouse edged the opener against Mark Groom to give the Harriers the lead, but Gary Lewis benefited from Jonathan Lowe jawing the black in the second rack to level.
Dean Smith put the Harriers back in front against Marcus Thomas and Jason Shilcock levelled again at the expense of Greg Quinn. Thomas and Stu Morrey edged the Hawks in front for the first time with a win over Smith and Woodhouse, but honours were shared when Quinn and Lowe beat Shilcock and Lewis on the final ball in frame six.
The Wheatsheaf visited the Haberdashers Arms and were put to the sword by the Knighton side, the result also knocking the away team off the summit of the Newport Pool League Plate.
That honour now belongs to Gnosall’s Horns, who produced a clinical performance in Newport to thrash the Pheasant. Jamie Wright, Martyn Holford, David Jolley and Dai Smith did the damage for the settled side in the singles racks at the expense of Craig Hutchinson, Gaz Davies, Alistair Griffiths and Joe Sayce and the additional of Liam Matthews in the doubles failed to stop the rot. “We had a large hole in our net tonight,” quipped Hutchinson.
There were byes for King’s Head B and the Royal Navy Club.
