LEADERS STAG SURVIVE WHEATSHEAF SCARE TO STAY ON TOP

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Market Drayton’s Stag suffered a scare in a tricky away match at the Wheatsheaf, but remain two points clear of Newport Legion in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League.

The gruesome twosome of George Allen and Mick Manning had put the visitors into a 0-2 lead over Nigel Sandbrook and Al Harvey, but Andy Wakefield got the better of Ollie Bennett to make it 1-2. Neil Dale gave the away side at least a draw with a win over Mark Hodgkinson, but Wakefield, playing with Harvey, set up a nervy last frame by beating Allen and Dale with a seven-ball clearance to make it 2-3. Manning and Bennett came to the rescue in the sixth to deny the ‘Sheaf a point in a black ball game against Sandbrook and Hodgskinson.

Newport Legion pulled a frame back on their rivals in the league table with a 1-5 win at King’s Head B. Simon Walley beat Kyle Savage to make it 0-1, although there was an early glimmer of hope for the home team when Jack Dicken fell to Ryan Langford.

That’s as good as it got, however, and Chris Eaton and Mick Beech took out Adam Barnes and Ian Perry to make it 1-3 and the quartet won both doubles matches, the introduction of Chris Perry for the home side in frame five having no effect on the outcome.

King’s Head A inflicted a second defeat of the season on the Sutherland Arms in Tibberton and moved level on points with Honeysuckle Harriers in fourth place. Bob Perry undid Matt Mansell to make it 0-1, but Ian Swinnerton levelled against Trevor Smith. The singles racks were nervy affairs and Irene Whittington edged the away side in front again by beating Andy Fishwick, only for Wayne Dodd to make it 2-2 against Mick Collins.

Ed Keenan and Smith snatched the vital fifth frame from Tom Fisken and Mansell to make it 2-3 and Collins and Whittington sealed the points in the sixth.

Wrockwardine Wood Football Club held Honeysuckle Hawks to a 3-3 draw in Telford. Gary Lewis was the star player for the away side in a result that did little for either’s team’s aspirations of a top four finish. It was the first draw of the season for the home side.

The Horns moved into second place in the Newport League Plate with a useful 5-1 win over Junction A. Jamie Wright beat Hyla Marklew to make it 1-0, Steve Roycroft levelled against Kevin Thackwell, but it was one-way traffic from then on and singles wins for David Jolley and Dai Smith over Gordon Sidebotham and Sion Richards made it 3-1 and the Gnosall quartet also prevailed in the doubles.

Honours were shared in the match between Junction B and the Haberdashers. Dave Heeley set the away side on their way, but wins for Mick Ashforth and Ryan Morris gave the home side the lead, only for Sarah Holland to level for the Dashers. The away side won the first doubles to secure a point, but the Morris brothers prevailed to snatch a point for the canal siders.

There were byes for the Shakespeare and Honeysuckle Harriers and honours were shared in the match between the Royal Navy Club and the Pheasant.

Two matches took place in the quarterfinals of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy. Honeysuckle Hawks were taken to a tie-break frame by a plucky King’s Head B at Chetwynd End and Marcus Thomas eventually overcame Ryan Langford to seal their place in the last four.

Honeysuckle Harriers earned the right to a home clash with Newport Legion after disposing of the Royal Navy Club in their quarterfinal match. Honeysuckle Harriers dropped one frame in a 1-5 victory in their preliminary match, with the winners facing Newport Legion.
