STAG AND LEGION GO MARCHING ON IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Only frame difference continues to separate the Stag and Newport Legion after 13 weeks of the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League.

The league-leading Market Drayton side have a game in hand over their rivals and cruised to a 1-5 victory over the Royal Navy Club, while the Legion dropped no frames against the Pheasant.

George Allen, Mick Manning and John Grobnik got the better of Mark Kijuk Dan Piper and Gerry Nunn to put the away side into a 0-3 lead but Alan Pritchett undid Neil Dale to give the Navy Club a slim chance of producing an upset. Dale and Grobnik sealed the win in the fifth frame and Allen and Manning capped the night in the sixth.

Simon Walley, Jack Dicken, Mick Beech and Ant Heathcote avoided a banana skin to clinch their match for the Legion against the Pheasant with singles wins over Tom and Joe Sayce, Gaz Davies and Craig Hutchinson. There was no respite in the doubles racks either for the home team.

Sutherland Arms remain in a comfortable third after dropping two frames against Junction B in Tibberton. Mick Ashforth played well to beat Tom Fisken and give the away side the advantage, but Matt Mansell and Ian Swinnerton hit back against James Morris and Steve Purves to make it 2-1.

The balance swung in the home team’s favour when Wayne Dodd undid Ryan Morris to make it 3-1, but Ashforth and James Morris ensured the match went down to the wire by beating Andy Fishwick and Swinnerton in rack five. Up stepped Mansell and Dodd in the sixth to confirm the two points for the home side against Purves and Dave Blount.

Honeysuckle Harriers maintain fourth place after getting the better of the Shakespeare..Owen Rigby, Tom Tonna, Dean Smith and Russ Woodhouse cruised into a 4-0 lead at the expense of Barry Smith, Graham Parsons, Callum Day and Kim Rigby and there was no change of fortune for the away side in the doubles frames.

WWFC remain close on the Harriers’ tail-feathers, despite going down to a rare home defeat at the hands of King’s Head B. Craig Williams won the opener for the Telford side, but three wins for Ryan Langford, Lorna Phee and Ian Perry stunned Tom Vernon, Chris Nolan and Ryan Genner. Despite Williams and Vernon making it 2-3 in the first of the doubles frames, Langford and Perry sealed the win in the sixth.

Seventh hosted sixth in a tense tussle between King’s Head A and Honeysuckle Hawks at Chetwynd End. The Hawks moved into a 1-3 lead before being pegged back by the home team. Mark Groom made it 0-1 against Bobby Perry and Jason Shilcock edged a tense second over Phil Emery to make it two.

Gary Lewis was made to pay for not taking his chance against Ed Keenan and Keenan cleared to make it 1-2 but Marcus Thomas made it 1-3 with a win over Irene Whittington. Back came the home team, however, and doubles wins for Perry/Emery and Keenan and Mick Collins earned the draw.

The Horns got the better of the Wheatsheaf in Gnosall, although the visitors look set to finish the first half of the season in the top half of the league.

There were byes for the Haberdashers Arms and Junction A.
